Unofficial Direct3D patch for Sega Rally Championship (Windows) Updated: 16th of May 2012 INDEX OF README: -BACKGROUND -HOW IT WORKS -OTHER FIXES -INSTALL -KNOWN ISSUES -RALLY.INI SETTINGS -HIDDEN ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS -CHEATS AND EDITS -THANKS & CREDITS BACKGROUND: Sega Rally Championship Direct3D was never released in retail or as a patch for the original retail release. Up until now the only way to play the Direct3D version was if you had a v3.01 driver disc from Orchid Righteous which came bundled with a Voodoo 1 3DFX card. Needless to say this is an very rare disc. HOW IT WORKS: This patch was made by using only the required Direct3D resources and merging them to run with the original retail release. The file and folder structure for the different resources has changed quite alot from the Direct3D compared to the original, but they do share alot of the same resources, just placed in different locations. To make RALLYD3D.EXE run with the shared resources some hex editing was needed. The CD detection also had to go as the Direct3D versions original driver CD is vastly different and trying to run RALLYD3D.EXE with the original retail disc resulted in an error. Luckily the individual(s) that made the NO-CD patch for the retail version back in 1997 included alot of documentation on how it was implemented and this was vital in making this Direct3D patch. The game will run with or without the original retail CD which includes the official soundtrack and also any custom made CD audio discs. INSTALL: Make sure you have Sega Rally Championship installed with the full install (~40MB) option on your computer. Unrar files into install directory of Sega Rally Championship (default: c:/SEGA/SRALLY/). Open RALLYD3D.exe to run the game in Direct3D mode. KNOWN ISSUES: - While Sega Rally Championship runs on modern computers up and including Windows 7 64-bit there are some speed up FPS issues for some users. This is common in all versions, retail, Direct3D, and with MMX patch. This can be very annoying for gameplay. To avoid this use the DirectX slowdown utility included in the folder /CPUGRAB. You might need to test what setting works best for your computer, but for a laptop with Core i5 a setting of 50 worked fine. - A feature only present in the Direct3D version is the ability to change speed from default MPH to Km/H. A bug in the game prevents this setting to be saved when exiting the game. --------------------------------------------------- RALLY.INI SETTINGS: Open rally.ini in the Sega Rally Championship folder. Alterations that can be made: d3dbg = disable (default=enable) Activates 2D backdrops as used in the retail directdraw version instead of 3D. Not recommended when running Direct3D version, but could improve performance for older computers. AGPQuality = FirstClass, BusinessClass or EconomyClass (default=BusinessClass) Unknown setting, no visual difference. Could be tied to AGP cards. splashlevel = 11 (default=11) Setting it to higher/lower values alters the size/direction of dirt sprayed by the car. gouraudfog = on (default=off) Use different fog (not much difference). FFStick = 1 (default=0) Activates force feedback support for joystick/wheel. controlquick = on (default=off) Speeds up controls (joystick especially). Default placement under [USER], but readme says to place under [Omake] carlight = on (default=off) All cars have lights at night. Place under [Omake] HIDDEN ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS: If the left, right, up or down arrow key is pressed before course data is loaded, the following effects on the game environment take place: UP Daytime (default) DOWN Evening LEFT Night RIGHT Fog CHEATS AND EDITS: N.B.
