Eh, everytime I try to open a link it won't open...

Anyways, I figured out what it means...

For those that can't find it, it simply refers to an encrpytion code that allows for the burning of HD DVDs...

So, um, what do these numbers mean?

Is this some kind of password to HD-DVD piracy?

To say it's for HDDVD ripping is a bit of an understatement. There are a couple of good reasons to have it out in the wild:

    1) It allows software writers to make HD-DVD compatible programs without the requirement of a (currently expensive) HD-DVD approval.
    2) It means that any computer with an HDDVD drive should be able to view content without the requirement that their graphics card supports HDCP (High Definition Copyright Protection) - a feature only available on the newest and more expensive cards despite many claiming HD support, and
    3) For those who hate DRM or feel restricted by it, it allows an open-source variant to exist.

However, this code is only useful to the more technical bunch and is completely useless to many who are shouting it around. However, if it appears in enough places, the people in control of it may give up.

    Maybe.

simple answer is yes!, there's already drivers for the 360 hd-dvd addon for windows, and all you need is some software (either powerdvd or windvd latest versions) and your good to go!

I have the drivers, but not the drive, couldn't afford it yet.

From what I recall though, it was only certain Japanese versions of powerdvd/windvd that had HD-DVD support, no?

Yes. And you need a graphics card with HDCP and uses DVI or HDMI - unless someone writes one otherwise.

And no, this key will not let you watch HD-DVD copies on it's own. You can't just plug this thing into PowerDVD and hey presto! You *need* to actually do a program.

However, I'd bet within the next couple of days you'll see free HDDVD playing software that'll work no matter whether you have the right graphics card or not.

And I'd bet you someone's already done a hack for Totem for Linux.

Well, obviously there's no plugging in the hex code, it's an encryption key :) I know a thing or two about coding too! ;)

I still can't justify buying the drive (although i ve found the drive , loose, for 40 pounds ). I don't watch many DVD movies as it is, let alone HD-DVD.

Besides, I have a 360 - if I ever bought the drive, it would be much easier to plug it in the 360 than do the PC routine.

 Had me sat wondering what the hell it was until I remembered having seen it months ago relating to the DVD drive.
