Acording to Yahoo Japan news these are the official sales figures for the Nintendo DS and PSP in Japan. I find it very hard to belive but Yahoo claim Nintendo to have sold 1'100'000 DS units in Japan by the end of 2004 !! That's an awful lot of units. While the PSP only managed to shift 340'000 units. Even if Sony hadn't sold out, could they have sold 1'100'000 PSPs? Makes you wonder doesn't it?
Here is a translation of the story followed by the original Japanese version

"Nintendo DS" -- The domestic sales figure of the new style handheld game machine stated by the ENTA brain trust (Tokyo) is 1,100,000-units and "Sony PSP" 340,000-units = These figures are for the end of year game sales. Game information magazine "FAMIMITSU" attracted attention by the year-end shopping rush on the 7th -- Nintendo "NINTENDO DS" of <7974> -- "of about 1,100,000 units and Sony Computer Entertainment (S C E) -- it was announced that Playstation portable (PSP) sold about 340,000 units. The ENTA brain trust, thinks the following - "What will happen in the game market of 2005 is unknown, both products show have their attractions." Although these statistics total from November 29 to December 26, it is said that PSP sales will amount to 450,000 units in the total by January 2. (Jiji Press)

This means absolutely nothing mate, the PSP could easily match Nintendo's sales figures if they could get enough of the things on the shelves which will start to happen over the next few weeks.

Every time PSP goes on sale, it sells out and if you are listening to the dev news, things are very, very quiet now on the DS front whilst there is PSP games getting announced left ,right, and centre.Nintendo done extremely well to take advantage of the PSP shortage at launch but they have faled to keep this momentum going with solid announcements over the last two weeks.I think once PSP is readily available over the next month or so, it will outsell the DS quite easily,I may be wrong but I don't think Nintendo can compete with the more powerful hardware and the fact that the dev co's are swarming to the sexier psp now as well.

Dev co's were worried that the psp would not have a successful launch, now it has it changes the situation once again.PSP is behind in sales but most firmly in the driving seat at the moment.

Hey, it's not all fun and games on the PSP either, methinks. Anyhow, wasn't the DS released several weeks before the PSP?

The DS has one of the greatest games of all time on it's system...Super mario 64, it also has Sawaru made in Wario and Band brothers as well.

Psp has two absolute gems in Ridge Racers and Lumines, and metal Gear Acid is very highly rated by press and gamers too, so each system has three top class games each, not bad for about a month after launch. :smt045

PSP has the more exciting games on the horizon though.

I think it was only 2 weeks before. I don't want this thread to become "Your DS is shite and my PSP is a pussy magnet" or vise versa type thread. I simply started it to inform people of how sales are going. Nintendomad has a good point in his post but like my translation says, both systems have their plus and minus points so we'll have to wait and see how 2005 shapes up.

Good point, there is no point in slagging off either system if you are not prepared to back your statement up by fact. Both systems have good games already and both have a reason to own them.I just personally feel that the DS will struggle unless it can whip out some great software on a very regulr basis, like the psone did against the Nintendo 64(OK not the greatest example, but joe blogss felt the psone had the better software) for example.People are obviously going to be wowed by the big pretty PSP screen and superior graphics, so the DS has to pump out innovative and exciting software like sawaru and catch!Touch!Yoshi!, even more so since the PSP has pumped out some innovative stuff of it's own with metal Gear AC!D and Lumines.

I get the feeling that not enough has been announced for the DS yet, whilst Sony are making announcements on an almost daily basis.Nintendo needs to steal back some of the thunder, they have shown they can do this when they put their minds to it, the marketing campaign for the DS just before releae in both the US and particuarly japan was superb and no doubt helped the bouyant sales figures they have had.

maybe one point in these numbers is also the price for both systems, wasnt a the ds a lot cheaper then the psp at launch ?

that could have convinced many people to go with a ds even it the difference was only 10-20 $ (does anyone have real numbers on both launchprices ?)

I don't think that is the reason in japan, considering Sony have managed to sell every console they have shipped since 12/12/2004 with ease and huge consumer demand.

Ds has been available since 02/12/2004 and had managed to sell well but the demand hasn't seemed as frenzied as it was for PSP, although the price helped sell units and the sales figures speak for themselves.Nintendo has alot to prove once Sony can meet demand and once both machines have been on sale six months, this is when it will become apparent if DS can truly compete over the long term for nintendo or if they will have to rlease the next console in the gameboy line.

Are you a playstation fanboy in disguise, Nintendomad?
I hear tell that you are in love with GT4 even though it hasnt been released yet, and that you get all giggly when the PS2 gets a good review. Does your name mean you are mad at Nintendo?

The only reason the PSP is "sold out" is because Sony gives like 3 units per store. Wow, selling out all the units, quite amazing...great demand! Can't meet it! *roll*

Yeah, it was released a few days ago. Doubtful anyone outside Japan would get it by now, even with EMS shipping.

I honestly don't know how you can look at the sales figures and come up with this kind of conclusion. Outselling the competition 3 to 1 seems pretty "frenzied" to me.

I'm not even going to dignify this absolute piss with a proper response, except to say that it is absolute shite.

I like the Playstation brand and I like the nintendo brand too, I also love Sega.I used to be hopelessly devoted to nintendo when I was younger, but now I am older and more mature(more mature than your sorry ass),I can see the positives in all the brands.I still have a big soft spot for nintendo but I wish they would produce more mature software and entice third parties to do the same on their hardware.

I am impressed by GT4, and I have been playing it for well over a week now, but it doesn't make me go all giggly you twat.I would also say that it isn't as good as Ridge racers on the PSP, which is a seriously bad ass racer and that is made by namco, just in case your casual ass gaming brain accused me of loving another Sony game more.

Are you by any chance the infamous Stinky Dinkins, Mr. Casual??

You sure act and sound like him!

How come if I had said half of what MR. Casual said to me, every one would have come down on me like a dose of bricks, but since he said it to me, it's ok.What he said was downright nasty and out of order.

Ok may have overreacted, but so would all of oyu, had it been aimed at you.If this is the sort of content you want aimed at people on the board when they are having a good discussion, fair enough.I was making some good points and really enjoying this thread up until that point, it's the first time I have checked assembler right away when I got home from work for months and I don't deserve that sort of crap for making a valid argument in Sony's defense. If we all agreed that Sony were shit and bad for gaming like Mr Casual obviously does, where and when would we ever have good discussions like they do on NTSC UK??

The mods need t seriously look at this, I haven't had an outburst for months and months, cause i was warned about it and I took my warning for the better of the board. But Mr. Casual makes a statement like that which personally attacked me and I wasn't meant to defend myself??
