I look at stores to see how much stuff like that cost all the time, and that's for just one person with all that data if they want that much data basically its that persons choice not mine if they want that much just saying.

You mean to put it on DVDs or on external drives?

External drives I just realized that storing this much data on dvd's and blu-ray disc is way cheaper but still expensive but nowhere near what I said in the first place.

Actually tapes are the least expensive and one of the more efficient method of storing data in large quantities, even the CERN Collider uses tape drives.

Let's see you can get about 10 DVDs for how much $5?(I'll use this) Each holding 4.7 GB each. If I'm not mistaken thats... 2979 DVDs. Which using my given figures is $1489.50, so yeah your lowest figure was close.

But I doubt everyone will put these on DVDs, someone might and store them somewhere, but most who want to have all of it stored might turn to SD cards and thumb drives, not gonna figure that out though.

Not trying to be rude with this, just pointing out pricing if you were to put it all on DVDs

I couldn't get the boxes of tapes, I have a cold and digging in the crates is not the best idea. I did find a few tapes I had forgotten to pack.

i believe thats the ultra compressed capacity

you'd be surprised how much density you could fit on tapes

What are you guys talking about? You can get 14 1TB hard drives for <$800. Who the hell would burn 3000 DVDs?? lol

Most likely all of the tapes won't be close to filled and the 2x compression is BEST CASE on real data. If you had 35gb of repeating data you'd get even better compression. Most data will already be compressed before archiving and many times people don't use the compression option so there is likely significantly less data than 14TB. A lot of data will probably be redundant as well across tapes if they were used for regular backups. The best system for an admin is to have a tape for each day of the week (maybe even a couple weeks) that they cycle through.

    35GB/94GB isn't that old, 2002/3 or so?
The best I have is a 20/40GB drive that I got free with a server back in 2004 or so.

Holy Crap....if anyone finds a solution to the little problem of releasing this huge amount of data I should start saving money for the Fundraiser + harddrives......whatever you can already count me in just in case there will be a solution *fingers crossed*

It would be cool to see any source code thats on these tapes released. Lots of graphics and art and stuff seems to get released/get posted but people who have actual game code tend to be a lot more hesatent to release it for some reason.

I can crunch through DDS 4 tapes, at home, with my SCSI Drive. Need to make sure the thing still works, I haven't made any backups in quite a while *facepalm*.
Some experience with sub-enterprise backup software, but nothing ancient.
