I seem to be the only one who noticed, but today is the 20th anniversary of the Japanese release of Super Metroid, one of the best games ever made and certainly a genre-defining game. It's the first half of the term "Metroidvania", the second half referring to Nocturne in the Moonlight from the Castlevania series. Kotaku noticed that the 10th anniversary of Katamari was yesterday, but not that the 20th anniversary of Super Metroid was today. Shrug...
Excellent game, even if it's tough to figure out "y can't Metroid crawl?" Besides the exploration aspect of the game, there were a lot of great features... I like that the last part of the game wasn't defeating the boss. Also, there was motivation to beat the game quicker...
Cant believe i missed this.... Super Metroid is hands down my favorite game of all time! Gonna have to give it a 20th anniversary play through tonight, lol
I got the latest issue of Game Informer yesterday and there was an informative article about how gamers even into today are discovering new things about the game and finding ways of beating it faster. I did not know that long boss battles could be shortened, especially the lizard one. Freeze blast the open maw and launch some Super Missiles. It's made me appreciate those classic SNES titles, especially when all those nooks and crannies are now withstanding the test of time.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmfV8IhsHq0 I love Super Metroid, and I happen to love speedrunning it and TAS's of it as well. Best game ever. That video might be a bit hard to follow, but it will show how far this game has come in terms of sequence breaks and other crazy shit. Was happy to see this thread, as I was about to sleep yesterday I looked across my room at my SM box, and remembered it came out in 1994 and realized it had been 20 years already... crazy.
