i bought a broken genesis 3 yesterday (i hope i can fix it), while waiting for it to be shipped, i decided to do some research about the possible mods for genesis 3. RGB mod is explained well (only if you have a certain motherboard unfortunately) though for 32x and sms compatibility i found a youtube video and some forum posts but no schematics. anyone around here have some more info about 32x and sms compatibility of genesis 3? thanks in advance. P.S. i couldn't find a genesis 3 icon unfortunately. Edit: sorry for misinformation. it seems all genesis 3 (VA1 and VA2) has native RGB out without any mod. s-video mod can still be applied as genesis 3 contains CXA1645 on both VA1 and VA2.
I think the best place to ask is Sega-16. I believe a forum member "Ace" maybe able to help you (if not someone else can).
thanks for the answer, i don't have an account at sega-16. i might get one. http://www.amibay.com/showthread.php?t=10687 i found this. that takes care of 32x and sms luckily. for stereo i found this: http://www.freewebs.com/vgmods/segagenesismodificaitons.htm though it needs a second LM324. i really wonder if there is an easy way for stereo mod.
LM325 has 4 ins and 4 outs if i am not wrong. if the cpu is adding l channel, r channel and sfx channel and amping the sum, 3 of these in pins in LM325 must be empty. then why did the original owner of the mod in here http://www.freewebs.com/vgmods/segagenesismodificaitons.htm said he used an additional LM325?
Because he did use an LM325. That doesn't help work out whether it's possible to use the existing LM325, he might just not wanted to solder to a surface mount chip if he didn't have to. You can't see all the pins of the LM325, so someone with one would have to work out whether there are any channels free (channel 1 looks odd, according to the pinout it has an output but no inputs ).
i didn't say the author is lying . of course if he said he did use an extra LM325, he did use an extra LM325. as a consequence of language barrier, sometimes what i am trying to say doesn't match what i write. anyways back to topic, is the myth about some versions of genesis 3 has stereo sound true? i assume not but i read it in so many places. i also read the clear audio mod can be applied to genesis 3 too with a change in resistor value, but it is too hard for me so i will pass. at least all variations of genesis 3 give RGB, so no need for an extra mod.
I know. My point was that he did add an extra lm325, but that doesn't mean you have to. It might be easier to add an extra one, or he may have found that you can't use the existing one. But from that web page you can't tell.
I've done the 32x/GameGenie/SMS restoration mod before. It isn't hard if you're very experienced with soldering as some of the points are quite small.
http://www.amibay.com/showthread.php?t=10687, did you use this and use 8 wires in total? also i assume this is VA1, right? and you can't apply these hacks on VA2?
Same info on that page as what I used. I'm not sure which revision I did it too anymore but it wouldn't surprise me if the VA2 needed a bit more work. I'd need to see macro shots of the PCB in order to determine if it is possible.
got my genesis 3. it is fully working, the guy gave 220v to the usa adapter so it didn't work and the seller thought it was broken. it has crystal clear RGB (better than my sega mega drive 2 on 60 hz mode), unfortunately the sound is mono. not much i can do i guess. i will try to post the main board pictures when i open the board.
