I recently got a 32x off of ebay (PAL- I'm in the UK) - it was listed as tested and working fine, got it yesterday and tried it out on my Mega Drive 1 console. It came with the official patch cable to link it to my mega drive 1 - it works fine apart from theres no sound. I messed about trying to get the sound working (including putting a lead from the phono jack at the front of the MD to my TV etc, 2 different scart cables, 2 different consoles but no sound at all. I then managed to get some sound by plugging some usb powered PC speakers into the front of the MD. (powered via usb slot on my tv) and the sound came through my PC speakers but its not very loud? Have I got a faulty 32x? I emailed the seller saying I think it's faulty as I can't get sound and he replied saying its ok and to just send it back.
No I don't really want to mess with it - I paid enough for it so I'd rather just return it for a refund if it is faulty if I'm honest.
its your choice, but you can repair it. if you can solder, then its not that difficult. replaced mine with new caps and 50/60 hz switch, working perfekt. but like a said, your choice.
I assume your Mega Drive 1 consoles (the two you've tested) usually output sound, right? What about non-32X games while the 32X is connected... do they output sound? Well, since I've never connected a MD1 to a 32X, I was surprised to find the following bit of information: The original SEGA Genesis does not output stereo sound from the A/V Port on the back, only mono. Once you hook a 32X up to it then NO sound will be transmitted through the AV Cable which now comes from the back of the 32X! The ONLY way you can get sound from a Genesis 1 & 32X Combo is to use the headphone Jack on the front of the Genesis. (click for source) Shouldn't that procedure be mentioned in the manual? The 32X came with a composite (mono) cable and RF cable (MD2 only)... perhaps your SCART cable works differently. I'm sure the more tech-savvy folks will shed some light into this.
i use my 32x with megadrive 2. did not tested it with megadrive 1. if thats true, then you need different rgb cable.
Ah ok this would make sense - I've just ordered a connector cable that goes from the Mega Drive 1 AV port and the headphone back to the 32x. I ran this set up a couple years ago and can't remember having this issue but will try with the new lead before I send it back. And yeah no sound from any game running through the 32x and both Mega Drives normally work fine.
i have also megadrive 1 with mega cd 1,there you must have special rgb cable with headphone jack that you plug in front of megadrive for stereo sound. but cant believe you dont have mono.
