So I recently acquired a 32X complete with all the original documentation. It shows a spacer designed for use with the CDX. I couldn’t find any pictures online of it though. Does anyone actually have one of these? Sega didn’t exactly sell many of either system, and it appears that you had to order it direct so I could see very few ppl having one.
If anyone can make a model of it, seems like something that could be easily 3D printed. Recently used mine to replace a broken floppy eject button on an Amiga500. Got any pics or dimensions?
These are all the views of it given in the instructions. I’m sure one could work out the dimensions to make it work, but without any kind of example it’s just a guess. It looks rather large so it’d be a big print job.
Does anyone know if these were ever offered to the public, even via mail order? The story I remember is that the combination of units failed to meet the minimum FCC shielding requirements, and thus was simply declared "incompatible" even though there was no true compatibility issues between the units.
Since Austin is using it as such I must assume it works, but without a spacer /support it could be prone to falling over? Maybe he can confirm.
A little more digging on the web basically turns up the following: FCC issues: as TriState notes, a lot is floating around saying the FCC wouldn’t okay the 32X/CDX combo because of potential RF issues (or something in that vein). This goes along with the reason some iterations have a dongle and they came with little shields for use on the model 1. Never produced: because of the above, Sega supposedly never actually released this spacer and later documentation states the two aren’t compatible. CDX compatibility: other than issues opening the CDX door, there don’t seem to be any major issues actually using the two together This seems to come up every now and then over the years but no one has ever found an example of one. Numerous people mentioned molding or 3D printing one, but it doesn’t appear anyone has actually done it. I do wonder if it’d actually help the systems fit together better, I don’t have a CDX myself to test this with.
I actually heard that using the 32x on the CDX is really hard on the system. Main reason I stopped using it on my CDX and stopped using burned games as that also wears out the laser.
Any evidence of this? I'm thinking it's fine from an electrical standpoint. The only way I could think of it being "hard" on it is the fact that it becomes top heavy and could dump over. As for a 3D printed replacement, the only one I know around here who has the skills and might have the interest is @BuffaloWing but he hasn't logged in to this site in quite some time now. Maybe message him on Shapeways?: https://www.shapeways.com/designer/buffalowing/creations
