I offered to replace the laser for someone on their 360 as it wasn't reading discs anymore. Having done this a couple of times before, I thought it would be straightforward.

Changed the laser and console was reading discs, but I noticed the tray wasn't opening/closing very smoothly. So wanting to go the extra mile, I took the tray out and greased the gears to help it open/close better.

Big mistake, now I've put the tray back on, it just opens as soon as the console is turned on. If I press the eject button to close it, it'll close for a second and pop back out.

I've been racking my brains for almost 2 hours now trying to fix it, having removed and replaced the tray loads of times. I don't know what's going on, any help?

It's the BenQ drive, I did look around and some people are talking about the magnet, but I don't think it's that. The tray just doesn't seem to want to stay closed or the console isn't recognising that the tray is closed?

There has to be a sensor for checking if its closed or not. maby there is some dirt on it?
Or a bit of grease :p

I just closed my own benq console. otherwise I would have take a look inside the drive :/

Yep you're absolutely right. There's these "prongs" (for lack of a better word right now) that touch each other when the plastic mechanism slides left or right, telling the drive whether the tray is open or closed. I think when I removed the tray I bent the "tray in" prongs slightly out of alignment. So when the plastic bit hit the prong, it closed but didn't stay touching so kept popping the tray back out.

After a lot of trial and error (bending the prong bit by bit, trying again x10 ), I seem to have found the sweet spot where the tray stays closed as it's supposed to.

Hopefully it'll stay ok... lesson learned!
