My 360 has this weird problem; randomly and for no apparent reason, when you press the eject button it will make a noise that sounds like it's trying to open but won't actually open. It'll do this 3 or 10 or 80 times and then suddenly it will open. It only seems to do this when there's nothing in the tray. If there's something in the tray then it will open right away. Has anyone else experienced this?
My friends 360s drive has issues opening the tray if theres no DVD already in there. American build quality.
I had this happen on a PC drive once. Did you accidently bump it or push it to close it rather than pressing the eject button? Sometimes you can throw the drive mechanism out of alignment with rough handling. Other than that no idea.
yeah right, nothing is made in america anymore. electronics are manufactured in china, assembled in mexico, and sold in walmarts.
Ya, get it straight. The reason everything is a piece of shit now is because it's made in shitty places like China, Mexico, and other parts of asia. If things were actually made in the US like they used to be they would be of good quality. But that's the past apparently as everyone is on the race to the bottom Walmart style. My 360's drive wouldn't close sometimes but I figured out if I tapped it back just alittle bit it would.
I've had better luck with Asian built things then American ones. Japanese cars, Taiwanese motherboards\consoles, Korean fridges and TVs, etc. And a lot of it is the mantra of the company. Nissan make some of the most reliable cars in the world in Northern England, because the company's attitude is right. Microsoft's is obviously to get the cheapest parts they can, hence the poor quality.
I hate to say it and I hope I am wrong, but it can also be a sign of a failing laser. The Playstation 2 & original Xbox mechanisms did this with a failing laser. It seems to be that the laser doesn't realise there is no disc, assumes there is and to avoid damaging the disc the eject is disabled. Other than that, if it is attempting to eject and immediately clunks then it sounds like something is jamming it. If your unit is still sealed then it's back to Microsoft it goes. However, before that. Unplug it, open the DVD tray gently and then hold the unit up side down and shake gently - I've seen bits of toast and a toy soldier removed from a machine that way!
I've had it happen a few times (yes, it was empty) and it took an additional button push plus some "guidance" (basically a small bit of prying on the bezel to get it to start opening). Question for the others having the issue: what is the orientation of your 360, vertical or horizontal? Mine is vertical. When I got mine in March of last year, I originally had it in the horizontal position and don't recall having the problem, and I've had it in the vertical position for the past few months and only had the problem maybe 3 times.
Parris: That doesn't make any sense. Why wouldn't it allow you to open the drive bay just because it thinks there's a disc inside? If it operated like that, then the first disc you put inside it would never come out. Besides, that doesn't explain why it does allow you to eject when there is a disc inside it. It'll even let you eject the disc in the middle of a game. EvilWays: My 360 is in the horizontal position. I used to have it in the vertical position, but I moved it because it kept making this weird buzzing noise. It doesn't seem to make the noise in this position. I think it did the eject thingy in the vertical position too.
Yes but sadly the cars still made here don't sell as well as they should because the government doesn't protect the business very well. But that's another topic. I use my Xbox 360 in a horizontal position. My first one (which died) I had vertical. I often wonder if the vertical position causes problems. I decided to go with horizontal because it just seems like a better idea to me. Ofcourse if this console dies I probably won't think it matters.
Nah, orientation of the sytem does not affect the red ring issue. It does cause some problems with certain models of DVD drive though. People claim it is only movement of the machine during operation that causes disc scratching, but I know for certain that some drives will eat the disc when the machine is stationary but vertical.
They sold very well when people were all for buying SUV's, big ass trucks they don't need, and buses disguised as minivans. Foreign cars, which are often more american made than fords, are selling well for a reason. It has nothing to do with lack of government control or protection.
Canada is so wierd. A Chevrolet made in Mexico is 'Domestic', but a Honda Civic built in Ontario is 'Import'. I'd still buy the Civic.
My system with a BenQ drive seems a little cooler, and just plain looks nicer vertically, but yeah, my old Hitachi system ate up discs standing up.
Hey! I just saw this thread and am pissed because I have been having the same problem. But one thing that also makes me angry about the DVD tray is this. I open the DVD tray and take a game out, place it in a case, then grab a new game to insert. But the 360 likes to dick around with me and decides to Auto-close the tray before I get the other disc in... IT ALWAYS AUTO CLOSES! Whats up with that? Does anyone elses disc tray just close without any user-input? GRRR! :crying: I almost wanna try and return it. Is that 3 year warranty still in place?
Yeah, mine does that too, occaisionally. You can't return it, though. They'll just repair yours or give you a new one.
Yeah, it definately gets extremely annoying. And I am sorry for the misunderstanding. When I said "return it" I basically meant return it for a fixed/new one.
This was the only problem I have ever had with mine.....part from my famous 4 red lights  Bought from mates gamestore.....just swapped it over no problems..... No such problenwith the new one
