I am looking to add one of these to the collection and give my son my core with hd

I can`t seem to see anywhere if it has an "optical out"

I can see HDMI etc but nothing on optical

Anyone got one here to shed some light on this for me

As far as I'm aware - yes. I haven't got one, but as far as I understand it's got a dongle which splits off the optical.

360's optical comes out of the hi-def cables

If you use HDMI, there should be a dongle that goes to the non-HDMI port (since the 360 uses HDMI 1.2 which doesn't seem to pass sound thru the HDMI port). If you don't use HDMI (for whatever reason), make sure the cable has the port on the connector (a VGA cable I bought (I think it was a Pelican, but not sure) didn't have the Toslink port at all).

So I can connect the console to my tv with the HMDI

But then do I have to also connect the older style/original type lead with just the red/yellow or white lead (between component & hmdi) as this appears to have a little dark patch that looks like an optical cable hole

If you connect the HDMI cable. the sound goes through that cable, nothing else is required.

Absolutely right (of course!) but just to clarify HDMI carries coax digital SP/DIF. If you need optical for an amp or similar, there is the included dongle for the standard 360 output which provides RCA and optical out.

But on my Samsung LCD I have in my office the sound is crap

So at the moment my 360 runs on component, picture to the screen, sound to a 5.1 system

With my PS3...picture to HDMI sound via optical to 5.1

So it looks like with a Elite you can`t run HMDI and sound via optical separately?

Just plug in the sound dongle to get optical.

    It's in the photo.

Is that the thing that plugs into the old/normal connection you would use? The one in the middle(ish)
