I've come into possesion of a RROD Falcon 360, I opened it up (seal was intact), cleaned the baked-solid useless thermal paste off the CPU and GPU, put on some Artic Silver Alumina and rebent the X-clamps to give them a bit more life. Fired it up and let it cook for 45 minutes (fan on CPU sink only) cooled it down and it boots! Dash is 2.0.7371, so it's J-TAGable, just wondering if it's worth the effort, I can add some better cooling to the console, and this was clearly the first time it's been repaired, what are the chances it will RROD again soon?
If the system was well looked after during it's life, no need to repair it or anything. Falcons are pretty good, mines been running since Mirror's Edge came out. Nothing too loose JTAGing it.
Get it reballed first, what you did isn't a fix it's just a really good way to damage the board. The CPU/GPU can't get hot enough to actually melt the solder and if it could it'd be really toasty and dead. It WILL RROD again. And soon. As for JTAGing it, sure it's worth it if it's stable. You don't have to go out of your way playing with a glitch chip and it's less work.
if you get it led solder reballed and you keep it cleen it should last a really long time, mine without a reball lasted a long time. and to me if it is jtaggable do it becuase jtag is generally way better than rgh just due to boot times...plus they make more money if you sold it online
Yes jtag it, my falcon was owned by an idiot who left it on ALL the time on its side in dusty carpet! I cleaned it up and jtagged it (first time soldering), been using it for at least 4 years. Oh and my son has made it fall at least 4 feet to the ground twice >.<
Yeah you just did a temporary fix. My customer come in with their 360 to get reballed and they always tell me they did the towel trick or they replaced the compound and it fixed it for a week before failing again. I rebally 360, PS3 and laptops everyday.
