I found a shop selling a brand new 360 HD-DVD add on for only 1980yen! I'm really tempted to pick it up but only if it can upscale normal DVDs and if it can does it do a good job? Does anyone know about it? Yakumo
I don't think it does mate. In the instructions that came with my elite it says that the 360 will only play DVDs at 480p which is what my Pioneer DVD player will do without the upscale feature switched on. The 360 will upscail DVD resolution avi files though to 1080i/p. Yakumo
Does it not say it will only upscale to 480p if you use a certain type of video cable? I think if you hook it up via VGA or HDMI then it gives you more options.
I don't get why you don't just keep on using the Pioneer player to play upscaled DVD's. It's not as loud as the 360 (although it might be a lot more quiet than mine which is from late 07) and you know for sure that it upscales very nice.
The Pioneer won't play Dual Layer DVD-R discs without skipping. Neither does my car navi, Son's DVD player or the kitchen DVD player but the 360 and PC will. All the other players will play the first hour or so but when it comes to reading the 2nd layer they all have problems. If the 360 HD-DVD drive can upscale then that would be a fantastic answer to all my dual layer DVD-R discs rather than having to watch them via my PC. Or, if it's true that a normal 360 can upscale via HDMI then maybe I should just wait until I buy a new TV? The TV I have no only has component in. By the way, which is the better image? 720p or 1080i? My TV seems to think that the 360's 720p signal is analogue while the 1080i signal is digital. I use a D4 Terminal connector from the 360 to the TV which says is a digital signal on the package. Yakumo PS: my 360 is very very quiet until you run a game from the DVD drive. Bloody hell, what a nasty sound and the vibrations...... I can hear it downstairs as it copies a game to the HD.
I dont know if they're sold in Japan but the best Upscaling DVD player is made by OPPO http://www.oppodigital.com/?partner=101 Had my Oppo Player since 2006 it's amazing and can be region freed easily. Edit seems the main site is only selling the Blu-Ray Players.
The 360 will upscale DVD via HDMI. It will not do it via Component. Both 720p and 1080i are similar in quality. Neither is "better." If you get a TV that can support 1080p, then that option would be the one to go for. As for analog vs digital that has to do with the way the signal is carried, not the resolution. I don't know how the D4 terminal carries the signal, but if you're using standard component, it is analog. If you are using HDMI it is digital. -hl718
720p is better for motion while 1080i is better for slower, detailed video, right? Say sports for the former, documentaries for the latter. I went through all the hd stuff a while ago just so i knew, still don't even have anything that outputs hdmi though. iirc D4 carries an analogue component signal, 720p
That's right but can also do 1080i. here's the official ratining for the Japanese D-Terminals * D1 480i (525i): 720×480 Interlace * D2 480p (525p): 720×480 Progressive * D3 1080i (1125i): 1920×1080 Interlace * D4 720p (750p): 1280×720 Progressive * D5 1080p (1125p): 1920×1080 Progressive So a D5 can use anything from D1 to D5. My TV has D4 so I can't go up to 1080p but can do anything from D1 to D4. yakumo
1080i and 720p use the same bandwidth, with the latter using it for whole frames whereas the former throws interlaced stripes but at double the resolution. The reason that your TV might give you a digital reading on 1080i is because of the downscaling perhaps? I would assume that 720p can be handled natively by your TV. I think Calpis should straighten things out since I m just making an assumption, i know shit about jp tvs.
well it depends on your TVs technology and capabilities. As a rule of thumb though, interlaced resolutions are considered better for fast motion whereas progressive images are known for their clarity/detail.
My TV really is odd. When you pump a 1080i signal in to it, it gives you a GUI for digital picture options while anything lower gets analoge picture options. I only have 2 HD machines being the 360 and the High Def' video Camera. The camera can output 1080p but because the TV can't handle that it goes down to 1080i. No 720p option. not really. If I buy a Blu Ray then it will have to be a good one. A very nice upscaling DVD player cost about 13000 yen but a good Blu Ray will cost about 50000 yen I just don't have that sort of money.
what about the PS3? If anything it's a good BD unit for what its worth, plus it happens to be a gaming machine too! I d suggest you hunt down a PS2-capable unit, considering how you and I both missed out on the PS2 era
