I'm just curious if its safe to run a 360 kit with a retail PSU that doesn't have a ground prong. Obviously I won't be running a sidecar with it, but I can't seem to find any stores around here that sell a PSU that has a ground.
Where are you that you can't find a PSU with a ground plug? All of the official supplies have them. If you're in Japan don't confuse the 2-prong Japanese plug with no ground. It doesn't carry a seaparte pin, but is still groounded. -hl718
All the US ones now have 2 prong, without a ground pin. I'm assuming that its grounded inside the supply itself, but I just wanted to make sure. Pretty much every gamestop I went to in the area here (NY) only has 2 prong ones.
Guess I don't go through retail hardware as often as others. Last retail boxed unit I saw was an "old" Elite (just bought, but had the HDMI cable inside and component cable) and it still had the 3 prong plug. Either way, you should still be fine as a 2 prong plug should be polarized. Just make sure that: 1) You're using an official power supply and 2) That the power supply you're using matches the board inside the kit If you're not sure what your kit has, buy a Xenon/Zephyr power supply and skip the Falcon and Jasper supplies. -hl718
I don't know about dev kits, but the 2 prong, and 3 prong PSUs are interchangable with retail units. I would guess it has something to do with the xbox's floating ground. But without a ground prong, they it has no ground? Probally just has a fuse like the xbox 1.
The Xbox PSUs have keyed connectors on the xbox end so you can't plug in a under rated PSU into a Xbox that requires a higher current. On the power connector end of the unit, it will have 2 or 3 pins. The 3 pin version has a cord that has a keyed connector (like old corded kettles), the 2 pin version has the cord with the ground pin filled in. Again this is to stop you from using one lead on the wrong PSU. The PSUs are internally fused but they are a pain to take apart if you do happen to blow one (I've done it once when I accidently plugged in a US power supply into a 230V supply...). The one I opened had so much bloody heat compound that I ended up ruining the PSU.
Look on Ebay or another online store to find one the news ones if memory serves are smaller and cant run older units
