The Tahi project is such an unbelievable thing. I'm always happy when they post a new screenshot and I want it to be real and come out, but the sheer scope of what they are trying to do definitely leaves me skeptical.

What are they using to create the game? If they are using the Sega SDK or Windows CE kit, they would need to have licenses in order to use official Sega created assets and libraries, and to be able to sell and distribute the game. Sega doesn't grant licenses anymore, and presumably the licenses would be expensive. It would also be illegal to give the game away for free using official development tools and assets.

The open source alternative and what I would assume they are using by default then, is Dan Potter's KallistiOS, a programming language which has been used for almost all unnoficial dreamcast releases (games, emulators, etc) including Rush Rush Rally Racing and the NGDev Team ports like Fast Striker.

But if they are using KallistiOS, there are lots of hangups for 3D games that have been pretty insurmountable for most indie DC developers. Namely, you have to create a comprehensive physics engine from scratch... in terms of 3D engines, this is beyond the abilities of even many commercial software developers who more commonly license a pre-existing engine to create a game, than make one themselves from scratch. Additionally, I don't even think KallistiOS has a functioning modem driver, so this idea of having Tahi as an MMORPG is pretty incredible too.

Add to this, that these guys are college students, according to their bios there are maybe only 2 programmers (see http://www.reticonentertainment.org/ for bios), judging from the bios they are programmers without years of experience or other complicated projects under their belt, they are probably doing this in their free time instead of getting paid for it, and that most of their updates for the last two years have consisted of graphic design, music, and story planning and no discussion about their technical development or what tools they are using to develop on the DC... it just leaves me skeptical because their game in its current plan would involve several milestones in complicated development for the indie DC dev scene.

In case anyone from Reticon Entertainment googles and sees this post, I'm not trying to be mean, but:

    1) If someone created a 3D engine running on the DC that would display graphics and lighting like in the screenshot, it would be a HUGE breakthrough in the DC development scene.

    2) If someone created such an engine and lighting, used KallistiOS, and was able to make it run at a playable FPS, that would be a HUGE breakthrough as well.

    3) If someone even created a simple program that accessed and used the modem to send and receive data online, that would be yet another HUGE breakthrough in the DC development scene.

RRRR doesn't run on KOS, it runs on senile teams own engine so would'nt others write their own engine in stead of using something old that isn't really updated anymore.

edit: tahi won't play online, they have already said this last year

Thanks for the updates, you're right RRRR doesn't run on KOS. Sturmwind, the NGDev Team games, and many others are KOS though. It's pretty much the only thing to go with if you don't have intimate knowledge of the DC's hardware. Again, a 3D engine is a really complicated thing to create from scratch and the retcon guys don't come across as having any significant resources, significant experience with programming, or intimate knowledge of the dreamcast. I'm not even sure if this Ionicon engine of theirs, and these demo screenshots, are running on DC hardware, since it sounds like they are using openGL which has very limited support with the available development tools.

I'd love to be pleasantly surprised though.

I swear you were quoting a post of mine over at Dreamcast-Talk where I said vaporware.

Seriously though, I have followed this from the very first post over at Dreamcast-Talk, which is now something like 33 pages long.

    http://dreamcast-talk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1382

I will continue to support the project, but I won't get all hurt if they never come out with anything.
