As of late I’ve been looking into 3D printing for a work project and it got me thinking. Has anyone used 3D printing technology to make a replacement case for a console? A bit of google-fu only found this:
    http://www.makerbot.com/blog/2013/03/27/make-your-own-ouya-game-console-case/

Which shows that the tech is obviously there to make it happen it only seems to be being done with the dullest console on earth (sorry ouya owners).

I can certainly see some very interesting possibilities for such as transparent cases for consoles (a see through megadrive would look pretty groovy with some leds inside of it) or even different shaped external shapes whilst still being able to fit original console internals.

Anyone here at Assembler have any thoughts on this topic? Or had an opportunity to play around with a 3d printer?

Wiggyx did one for SNES. You could see it in his post. I have experience playing with the technology, it can be quite useful on some applications as long as you maintain a realistic expectation. There are many competing 3D printing technologies out there with different capabilities in terms of material strength and print resolution, so choosing the right type can greatly affect the outcome of your project. And lastly, printing something the size of a typical console is quite expensive.
