I need to scan and print the housing for my Dreamcast karaoke unit. I have a mod I want to do but I don't want to cut holes in the karaoke unit. I want to take the knobs and ports off of it. I don't want to ruin the karaoke unit even though its technically useless now. The form factor is definitely not useless.
It won't be economical to replicate the whole housing. You are looking at about maybe $250-$350 (or more) to get it printed at places like Sculpteo or Shapeways. Plus stuff like this normally doesn't get scanned as-is. There are more work involved as post process. Looking at ebay right now, a new unit can be had for $49.99 ish. But the shipping is expensive. What are you planning to do? Put a harddrive in there?
A hard drive sounds good, resin cast or molded doesnt have to be 3d printed. Plaster of Paris maybe? I'm going to remove everything internally then have it copied.
or buy a second dreamcast and use it's bottom shell. Sort of mold them together.. a double decker dreamcast if you will
