There's no 3DS games out to even test it for them to say it's officially "hacked". None have been released or dumped so there may still be other anti-piracy measures being developed before it's released. Showing the R4 working on the 3DS is just letting Nintendo know they need to patch it out. You can see that guy's face and he's using a stolen 3DS in the video. Not a very smart move.

Stolen? How do you know it is stolen? Also it sounds to me like while it may be hacked to run DS software, as you mentioned there is no reason to believe that 3DS software/3DS mode is hacked.

Meh, as stated this is just running a DS flash cart on the 3DS which I had anticipated happening quickly. Hell there aren't even flash carts out that take advantage of the DSi's extra functionality as of yet. No real incentive for that one I suppose given all you get is two cameras, WPA, 802.11G, an SD card slot and access to internal flash. All in all not worth the effort given most people likely still have Lites.

The 3DS isn't even released. A month or two ago a bunch of them got stolen off the assembly line by Chinese workers. You can see the reflection from the screen that he is Chinese as well as the menu for Mario. The 3DS doesn't release until March. What I'm hoping for is an exploit that can be executed from the SD slot itself. Similar to the Wii. The home menus have a lot in common appearance wise. So maybe the software is similar and will be easier to exploit now.

The system is a Japanese system, the ROM he is playing on the flash cart is Chinese.

remember the 3ds part has it's own encryption, afaik the ds part is just a ds cpu on the board.

So you think he got a 3DS imported from Japan to China on the first day? How do you figure it's a Japanese 3DS? I'll stand by my argument that it's stolen off the assembly line like every other 3DS flashcard video proof that's been on the internet so far.

If you watch the video of the stolen one, it doesn't boot like a commercial 3DS.

This means either it's one that he bought, or stole from the assembly line further down in production when they were making units to ship out to stores, but what is the likelihood of Nintendo letting that happen a second time? And it's a Japanese 3DS because there is no 3D iQue.

I've noticed that most of the stolen ones seem to have no back plate. It looks as if there was another plastic shell that goes on the bottom. You can see the battery in that video. Does that mean they swiped it right before that step on the assembly line? I wonder if Nintendo did some digging into this.

I have no clue how they assemble these but it's possible. I'm sure Nintendo didn't just let this go either, they must have done something.

I would imagine the proper operative word is "attempted". As in they definitely attempted to do something. As of late as long as you stay under the radar and don't associate something like this video with something else that can be directly connected to your name you are likely fine.

Then again I sincerely doubt the guy who made the video didn't post something of it or his hacking using his home internet connection (strike 1: personal IP address) or an account somewhere that at some time has been used from an IP address that can be traced back to him (strike 2: not using new, unique accounts from new IP addresses such as TOR). People who do this sort of thing are either doing it for a grade (I believe Bunny originally hacked up the XBox as a school project and I'm sure many guys at MIT do similar stuff) or can't keep their ego in check long enough to not start spewing information.

Somehow c4eva of 360 firmware hacking fame has yet to have his ass branded by Microsoft. How he has done that I'm not sure but I wouldn't be surprised to find out he lives in Sweden or some place just out of reach of MS legal.

Of course this "R4King" could likely be a Chinese citizen or living in Hong Kong. People get away with all sorts of shit under that government that in the US would have you bent over a barrel screaming for some Vaseline. Such as GeoHot (though I firmly believe Sony is being allowed far too much leeway in what they are doing. Then again I'm neither the U.S. government nor an unreasonable human being).

Truth be told I am too since SDHC cards are dirt cheap compared to micro SD. Though I've noticed lately that updates for most cards seem to have almost dropped off the map completely with one group claiming they lost the source to their firmware only to see the claim that they were just behind on what they originally said their release date was purely to buy time for Super Scribblenauts put forth.

People like GeoHot ruin the console hacking scene and homebrewers by being the attention whore that he is. He's a very egotistical and selfish kid. He was on a TV show the other day bragging about what he did and making fun of Sony. He now comes off as the guy who speaks for the whole community. Then again it isn't like hackers haven't always been seen as the anarchist basement dweller since the term was derived. I just wish he hadn't released those security keys and started this massive storm for everyone else to get with.
