So the R button on my 3DS has gone out. Nintendo wants $85 to replace a $0.25 part (yes, I realize there is more cost than the part). I see people sell the micro switches on eBay, but I have no idea if they really will work as they should (used, knockoffs, etc.). Has anyone had any success buying these from somewhere and can recommend a store?
They are just tact switches, a part is a part.. Just because it's inside a console makes no differance..
Search on eBay for replacements. They're pretty cheap. What is surprising is the ease of replacement! Nintendo at least designed them to be the most easily replaced part. Anyway, I'd like a good recommendation on which tact switches. The biggest problem with these things is that the dust accumulation ends up making these switches crap. Is there a dustproof switch or a microswitch that small?
IIRC nintendo's tact switches have a different pin pattern than the common switches you can find on eBay... if anyone finds a good link please share
Are these not on flex cables? Might as well buy the whole part for $8... It seems to be the average price anyway.
The ones's I've seen are on flex cables, yes. Looks like I'll be picking up a set then. If they work well I'll post here which ones I got. Thanks for all the help!
bleh, now I realise it's the 3DS you people are talking here... I was mistaken and thought NDS ... :\
I usually charge $10-20 for this fix, BTW these things break because the switches are poorly sealed and are too small, they get dirty and no longer make contact when pressed, I see this all the time on DS Lites and later, my experience is that it is the most common problem with modern handhelds from nintendo.
Here are the ones I bought, and the R button works perfectly now! Make sure if you're doing the repair the the ribbon cable doesn't get caught in the case when putting it back together, I though of that just in time. http://www.ebay.com/itm/251505561498 EDIT: Oh, also, these buttons seem to be much more quiet than the original ones. I don't know if it's just the batch I got or all of them.
I have fixed a few of these but it tends to be the cable that is torn and not the switch itself that is not working. People must have opened the 3DS for another reason and torn the cable when removing the back casing.
