whats the state of the 3ds modding/development scene as of now have they broken the encryption on the roms as of yet?
The Gateway 3DS is the only card as of now I am pretty sure that allows you to play back ups of your personal carts.
Yeah, Nintendo patched whatever was making it work 2 updates ago. Gateway and other clones haven't found a way back in.
I think the region unlock is still in beta for the Gateway also? If they can implement that and allow for current firmwares it would be this generations R4
I've heard Gateway was gonna implement a Full Nand dump option, which can possibility mean if one makes a CFW for it using your own dump we can have a possible permanent hack without need for Gateway 3DS at all!
As far as I know it works for every compatible game so far. They've beaten the AP in MH4 which leaves Pokemon and Animal Crossing as the only games that don't work. It'll be able to dump the NAND yes, but its still encrypted with no way to decrypt it yet. And even if we could do that, you'd need a bootrom exploit to actually get the 3DS to accept the modified firmware. Besides, there's been a mod for dumping and reflashing the NAND for a while now, requires soldering some points from the motherboard onto an SD card, and so far Gateway doesn't seem like it'll be capable of actually reflashing NAND so you'd still need that mod to actually use any dumped firmware. There is a CFW in the works by smealum, well respected DS developer. Only basic functionality so far but allows full execution of custom code, examples being 3D screenshots and cheating in games. It's still a long way from being in any kind of state to release, is like the most recent PSP CFWs in that it needs to be manually restarted with each boot, and also only compatible with consoles on 4.5 or lower.
