Luigi's Mansion PAL was 50hz only if my memory serves me well. Maybe there's a list out there somewhere

OK. I've added a few suspects to start with. It seems like info is mixed about Doshin the Giant, I'm erring on the side of 50hz only.

I have quite a few PAL games, all of those in the list. I will be able to check but not for a while.

No problem. It's well overdue for someone to organize this in one place.

Doshin runs at 60hz, I can confirm this.

Honestly, can't people make up their mind on that one? I've seen claims both ways.

Most people are just speculating, I live in the US and have played the gc pal version in 60hz. Plus timing to hold B and get it to run in 60hz can be tricky.

If the game locks itself to 60hz when it detects non-PAL hardware, or when the component cable is detected, either of those things would explain a lot.

Forcing 60hz through modchips, homebrew, Freeloader, Action Replay, or other exploits, isn't what this topic is about.
I'm specifically listing games without official Nintendo support for 60hz.

Is Micro Machines 50 hz only? I think it was a PAL only game and I could never get it to run on my HDTV on the wii.

Dunno, there doesn't seem to be much information about the game.

My Sanyo DP42841 is strange in having some undocumented PAL support (nothing useful mentioned in the manual).
I mean this topic wouldn't be here if I couldn't display 50hz. Except it, from what I can tell, is incapable of revealing what video modes it thinks it receives! The remote "info" button gives no resolution. Anyway that's derailing us...

I think he meant that holding B brings up the option to choose 50hz or 60hz. I don't think he meant he used anything out of the ordinary to get it to work..

Exactly, for PAL GameCube games that have 60hz, just like NTSC ones that support 480p, you have to hold the B button on startup to get it to boot that way. I find it so puzzling why Nintendo just didn't include a regular screen like everyone else instead of using this odd method to boot in Progressive or 60hz. Dreamcast was nice in that most pal releases would auto boot into 60hz if detected.

At least NTSC GameCube games make sure you want 480p. Are PAL ones supposed to ask for 60hz, or is it done silently with nary a message?

Nope. I think, in Nintendo's infinite wisdom, they decided that if you know what 60hz is and/or if you know your TV can support it, then you will know that holding B brings up the option on game boot to switch to 60hz. Otherwise, the game will always run in 50hz. I think they did this to stop the user from seeing the 50hz 60 hz option come up by default and then the user choosing 60hz, and getting no display or no colour or some other problem. They basically assume the user is dumb by default but gives you option to enable 60hz if the user is not dumb.

One more thing.. If the user previously had chosen 60hz, and saved the game, sometimes, it will just auto select 60hz again (and tell you that it has). I don't think every game does this, but some do.

Okay, thanks. Now for one of us to try Doshin the Giant on a real PAL console.

Depends on the game some have a 50, 60hz menu (mostly newer games I think) others you have to hold B, otherwise 50hz only. My Doshin is packed away but I have a dump on one of my HDDs, when I get home

Ok it seems I have some game dumps here, I tested
    50hz only
    Tales of Symphonia
    Micro Machines
    Skies of Arcadia
    Bust A Move 3000
PS I was testing in nintendont, Arcadia doesn't run when progressive is forced

Games that have the 60hz menu from memory:
    Fire Emblem
    Paper Mario
    Mario Kart Double Dash!!
    Pikmin 2

    Geist 60hz only
    Metroid Prime 2 60hz only
The Legend of Zelda Master Quest 60hz only
The Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask 60hz only

Games that support 60hz when B button is held:
    Super Smash Bros Melee
The Legend of Zelda The Wind Waker
    Super Mario Sunshine
    Resident Evil
    Resident Evil Zero

    That's it for now

I haven't used nintendont. Did you experiment with its settings? Trying to force NTSC might help.

I didn't really want to force anything as you wanted to know if it worked without any mods? Progressive scan was left on since last time I used it but I turned it off for other games I've tested
