consumer demand..? a taste of 2007..? Critical Acclaim?!?! Whatever they 're smoking, I definitely want some too
As the Sony rep' opens his mouth a independent reporter not on the Sony gravy train is heard muttering something behind the so called experts from IGN and so on. I can smell something like shit? What is it? Is it a cow patt? Oh, I'm sorry, it's bull shit Yakumo
I wonder which console manufacturers parent company happens to be a member of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences then?
Let's not forget that not everyone in the world hates Sony like the majority of people on this forum.
not hating is one thing giving an award then saying everything the wrong way is another! I respect the Ps3 from an engineering stand-point. It's very original (Save the RSX) and a nice concept. But practically speaking, I haven't felt there's a difference from the 360, or that the controller is that special. I actually didn't like the controller at all, and everyone whom I saw playing thought it was the ps2 controller and wondered why the rumble isnt working
It probably doesn't deserve the award, but did Sony ever get one for the dual shock design? Sometimes they leave these awards until the design has matured a few iterations down the line. Personally, I think the Dual Shock 3 is the best design this generation except for the lack of feedback. The Wii-mote is more innovative, sure, but it is less practical as a long term gaming device. As a concept the Eyetoy is the best console control design ever. In terms of the PS3, Microsoft served Sony a Coup De Grace with the 3 core PPC. I doubt Sony saw that one coming and the cost implications between the CELL and the XBox360 CPU is huge compared to the performance difference for game task processing. We'll see what happens in the future once developers get to grips with the CELL, I guess. There must have been some fun times in IBM during the development of both systems.
Taucias, regarding the CPUs I wouldn't really compare them. Each is optimised for different tasks, and is handled differently. It can be down to a matter of preference, and game-type really which is better than the other. the 360 has been out longer as well, which makes it a more familiar platform. Nevertheless, it's like comparing apples to oranges. I like both approaches, and if I could (Easily) afford a Ps3, I d get it just to run linux;p
It's going to take developers a long time to exploit the benefits of the CELL, if they ever will. The main benefit the XB360 CPU has over the PS3 is that it operates on a relatively familiar level for PC developers (albeit part of the PPC platform), as you rightly say. Having said that, as a programmer I am more interested in learning to use the CELL architecture than the XB360 CPU, but professionally I wouldn't want to take that risk. I don't expect the next generation of CPUs to be so radically different because the development costs of changing over each generation have just got too massive for the industry to cope. I am betting that if/when Sony announce the PS4 it will probably just feature a CELL with more SPUs and Microsoft will take a similar route. I don't see CPU migration being such an issue with the Japanese and from interviews I have read the GPUs on both systems are causing more headaches for them than adjusting to weird new CPU technologies, and that is mainly due to them wanting to compete with American and European studios who are highly experienced with ATI and NVidia chipsets and have much less trouble pushing the graphical bar. Companies like Sega, Namco and Capcom have been developing software on insane arcade configurations for years. Ultimately the Japanese developers will decide the winner of this generation because Japan is still the source of most of the popular console gaming franchises. This is the main reason I reckon Sony will survive this PS3 disaster (but will lose a much bigger slice of the market.) Linux on the PS3 will always be crippled, unfortunately, but it's good to see that you can install it and actually use it productively. It would be nice to see something similar on the XB360, but I can't see a version of XP or Vista being released!
Well duh! these CES awards were always BS people! half of them are given to vaporware and stupid products that never see the light of day. The jury is made of either stupid or corrupt bastards, end of story. And taucias, the reason sony used Linux instead of, well anything else is that is popular and there's many versions for PPC CPUs, while Windows is tied to X86 and ARM (for mobile versions). Sony wouldnt let MS get money off the PS3 with a windows versions after having lost money on the hardware, and MS wouldnt do a PPC windows since that means with a slight mod it could run in any PPC device, like Mac (from before intel) GC, Wii, and PS3.
I can hardly be called a Sony basher and Personally consider the Duel Shock to be the best controller ever made. That being said let's be honest... If anyone deserved this award this year it should be Nintendo hands down for the Wiimote.
speaking of nintendo and controllers , their 'retro' controller disgusts me. If it werent for the ackward joystick technology behind the n64, the shape of that controller fits my hand the best. Then follows the GameCube. As far as innovation goes though, Wiimote all the way. Of course, when talking about 2D games and fighters, nothing beats a Saturn controller, although the materials feel cheap Shadowlayer, the Windows you re talking about, being 'tied' to ARM is WinCE based. WinCE has little to do with proper windows beyond the GUI. In the same manner, you could have a linux distro looking identical to windows, but that doesn't make it Win32 or Win Although I mostly despise Windows for x86, code-wise WinCE has been always a very solid platform for embedded systems. Even Hitachi's HARP (offering an SH4 processor, ring a bell?) had WinCE variants along side Linux That said, MS doesn't need to 'port' windows to 360. The know-how is already there. The OS powering the console is Win-based after-all, although not a straight port or binary compatible! Building upon that in order to make Win360 would be a possibility if consumers would actually bother buying it. However, seeing how MS has both a console and the PC gaming market, they re trying to keep them as distinct as possible. Thus the lack of mouse and keyb inside games on 360, as a matter of policy.
Yeah I know, BTW I knew the Xbox used a Win2000 kernel, but the X360? uses the same or a WinXP based one? And yes, the SH4 version rings a bell, one with a orange-swirl on it:lol:
actually, hitachi HARP systems running WinCE on an SH4 are more than just a DreamCast They were complete mini-computers/devkits for any sort of consumer electronics with an SH4, like videocameras etc.
"The overwhelming consumer demand"?? Maybe they should go to a game store and try to buy a wiimote.. then they will know where the real demand is. I went around in every possible story in two different cities some week ago trying to buy a second controller.. they where all sold out! >_<
Well... Looks like they just did  Still, Sony has yet to surpass the original PSX and Dual Shock combo in terms of design. Damn that was one great looking console (I'm a sucker for flip-tops ), one of the best in my opinion! Though, the PSTwo isn't bad either! BTW, all the Sony "doom and gloom" is a little depressing! I'm sure PS3s will start selling better as soon as some of the really good games start coming out. The launch was unimpressive, but there are some titles I'm really looking forward to! It's a shame I'm broke though and can't afford it yet so it'll be a couple years down the road (which is perfect for me anyway, since that's when the selection will be good and all the bugs that come with launch units will be ironed out).
speaking of lack of titles, is there anything interesting on the Wii on the horizon? (besides virtual console games) For what its capable of , the Wii has under-performed both technically and in matters of connectivity (online gaming or at least on-line access through games for rankings, etc). They better get their act together at nintendo if they want to keep up the momentum of sales. Wifi connection games on the DS also need to be amped up. things are veeeery slow in my opinion, especially compared to the X360's services and entertainment. Although I don't own a Gold account on the 360, nor do I watch DVD/HD-DVD movies on it (no time , no money, etc) it's quite the entertainment piece! Wii should get lessons if more grown-ups are to be attracted, beyond the simple games. (my parents love the 360's multimedia capabilities , and they re worlds apart from anything video-game;p )
I agree, even the PS2 had a bad time after launch against the DC, yet it grew a bigass 70% market share. The problem is we could say the same about the PSP, yet is more than two years old and still waiting for that killer-apt, even when the launch was way better than PS3's... That's what willis....I mean I was talking 'bout... The Wii is both underpowered and overpriced: casuals wont see the wiimote but as your parents did, the extras. It was the same between the DC and the PS2, even when the gap between the two wasnt as big as the one between the Wii and the X360/PS3. Anyways, the only game I'm waiting for is Sonic and Mario Galaxy, unless it comes out for the Wii2:dance:
