I realize that this would not be worth the time and effort to do, and it would need it's own writer etc etc. But would it be possible with what we know about the 64DD to make a rewritable disk for it that you could copy games/homebrew to? Do we have any pictures of official Nintendo disk writers?

Can't you write to the 64DD (Dev version) using the Partner64 dev kit?

No clue, someone else here may know though.

EDIT: I see someone does! Could you rewrite games, or just blue disks?

well I'm currently working on that. I have yet to successfully write the demo DD game but it is possible to write to the dev blue disks. Now rewriting a gray disk is different, that's something I may try much later down the road when I'm more versed in the partner software. All the documentation says not to use commercial disks because it could damage the dev unit. I've yet to find out exactly why you couldnt erase a commercial disk and format it, as there is a function to format them with partner

edit: plus you'd have to have something to write to them. it would have to be a 64dd rom, you cant just write regular n64 roms to a disk and expect them to work. If an unreleased 64dd game was to surface you'd see it happen if not by me then by someone eventually

grey (=retail) disks are writable, but not with the leo library.
Also, grey disks have a slightly different FAT when compared to blue (=dev) disks, which is why you cannot use the dev leo to write / format grey disks. If you would format a grey disk, say with the partner N kit (assuming it to be possible, since it is not), the grey disk would become a dev disk.

that's what I figured, that it would become a dev disk but that is what I would want. Since the dev disks are so hard to come by individually having a few extra, even if they are colored gray, would be nice :)

Point, but thing is the leo library does not let you write on write-protected formatted disks...at lease I didnt succeed :)
