I've been doing some research on 64DD developing and have been wondering, is it possible to rewrite a retail 64DD disk with your own rom image? Sort of the same concept as the famicom disk system. With a n64 top slot dev kit (v64jr for example) could you write the image to an erased gray retail disk? Can you erase the retail disks? Any of the programmers out there have any idea?

Nope, only part of the disk is writable.

are you sure? well, it's magnetic media after all, so the limitation ought to be based on software, and if that's the case, you could theoretically "burn" a different image to a disk if you can write the software to do it.
of course I'm not saying that the procedure is even remotelly available, but theoretically the media itself should not really impose that limitation.

it may be possible in theory but the retail DD obeys the DDROM and the DDROM takes its cues from the TOC for what is ROM and what is RAM.

The writing abilities are limited by either the media or drive controller.
