Hohoho! Retro Christmas everyone! (Ok, we're still in November but lots of shops sell Christmas stuff from October anyway)

Behold a music album expecially for the chiptune lovers and the NES maniacs. Its title: 8-bit Christmas. All the tracks are very inspirited and will reminds you more games like Megaman and less the classic christmas songs.

You can download the album from its original site:

Why do people always refer to music like this as "8-bit"? Most of it sounds more like 16-bit music to me.

I actually agree. Even though I like the tunes, but then again chip tunes are made to sound either like 8 bit or 16 bit. Or am I wrong in my assumption ?

sounds good. i think the reason why they used 8bit is cause its like a music genre. its like the generic term for old-school video music..
Which i don't really mind the addition, as long as people understand the difference.

That's just it. I don't think people understand the difference. They just blindly apply the term without giving the least thought as to what it means. Actually, you could argue that the terms 8-bit and 16-bit as they were originally used were like that too.

It just annoys me when people hear someone else use a word, assume that they understand what it means from the limited context in which they heard it, and then they use it in ways it wasn't intended to be used. I guess it's just a pet peeve.

Sorry to take the thread a bit off topic.

Ironically true "8-bit" music is mostly composed of 4-bit envelopes.

la-li-lu-le-lo: I agree with your last statement too, cause it makes sense to me at least.
Call a spade a spade, and call "8bit Christmas" for chiptune Christmas instead. Since it would make more sense.
