I bit the bullet and bought a pack of 99min CD-Rs from DealExtreme and I've gotten nowhere fast. So far my LG DVD burner will burn to them but can't finish burning due to what I'm interpreting to mean the laser lost it's place on the disc (I can't find the exact error in the logs for some reason). I have two older Plextor burners from 2003 and 2001 and both have very different problems. The 2003 model makes a nasty sound trying to spin the discs and the vast majority of the time refuses to even recognize the disc spitting it out; other brands work fine. When it does recognize it and starts to burn the lead-in it'll usually come up with "write error" and not even attempt to burn from what I can tell as the disc appears empty when stuffed into another drive. The 2001 model does the same thing but without the nasty sounds and recognition problems. Best I can tell the discs are trash or my burners aren't happy with the discs. Overburn has been setup properly and all drives do support it so I know that isn't the issue.
see if there are any firmware updates for your current burner. it may be that the discs are just crap but also may be the burners are fussy. i've kept my NEC ND3520AW as it's lasted and burns everything i throw at it, just a CD/DVD writer but it's got hacked / modded firmware on it also what program are you using to burn? and have you tried others
So far I've tried the latest ImgBurn which won't support the NRG files I'm using but it also can't handle a test burn of >700mb and two versions of Nero. One is the last of the 5.X.X.X line and the other is another of 6.X I've seen mentioned used specifically to successfully burn 99min CD-Rs. I'm not at my computer right now I did this all on so I can get model numbers and version numbers later if necessary.
slightly concerning as i was tempted to get some of these from DX myself, not got round to it yet. something like http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Tools/CD-DVD-Images-Utils/nrg2iso.shtml not sure if this will work with multi track images as i've not tried it but might help with trying to burn them with imgburn and overburn also you may be able using DD via command line in linux or something like K3B from what i've read some burners just don't like them as they differ from the standard book type
I've used the DX 99min cdrs for years without a problem. Are your burners known to be compatible with 99min burning? Else, try a sub-80 min burn, just to see. Firmware updates can be a solution too. Good luck Ape
Hi It will appear that you may have a faulty batch, as I ordered some of the exact same "banana" discs as you recently for my DC 99min backups and all of them fail on the DC. Myself and other users have reported this to dealextreme to get a refund. Trust me on this, as it will save you the hassle of trying to figure the problem out, as I tried 4 different burners, different speeds, different programs and every disc was fubared.
