I think this would be the best place for this, seeing as it's the restoration area. I have recently gotten an Xbox 360 (Xenon MoBo) that has never been sent into microsoft with a revision date of '05. The only thing is that the 360's DVD drive (a hitachi that had been flashed, not by me) stopped reading games. That basically means the laser is dead since it opens and closes, and spins up discs (you can hear the motor). I was wondering what the best course of action is?

    Either:
    a) Grab the DVD key and spoof another drive (I was thinking lite-on, they are the quietest and coolest)

    b) replacing the DVD's laser

    c) some other method I had not thought of.

I would like to hear your suggestions, since you guys would know more than me. I would like to point out I am 16, I'm on my own budget, and I am far from financially stable so remember, price range. (Preferably >75). I don't know if this comes off asshole ish or if I'm in the wrong section, but I'm new here, please don't be mean.

Option A is your best bet.

If you're looking for tech discussion, check out the Microsoft specific area of the board.

Just go on ebay and get a laser for like $10, the model is SF-HD63
They are simple to install, and that way you don't have to worry about bricking a drive

I've been doing this for a while, and I have to say that I hate Hitachi drives. They are loud and sometime difficult to flash. I would say spend about $40 and get a Samsung, BenQ, or Lite-on from ebay, then just read your hitachi, and spoof the new drive to it. If you don't want the drive flashed dont get a liteon as the only way to flash to it is with a hacked firmware.

Easiest solution no one has suggested is to get a working Hitachi drive off ebay, then swap out the controller board with yours.

That way you have new, working hardware and the same key. Worked fine for me

Alright, I'm going to buy a new drive. I have a proble for a liteon, liteons are AMAZINGLY reliable and quiet, but a bit pricey. I think I'm going to get a samsung since they are relatively simple to flash/spoof. I can flash drives easily, I just wanted some opinions
