A Cheapo's Guide to Akihabara

Yeah, they've been pretty on par with eBay prices every time I've been. Not as insane as eBay often is (I sometimes wonder what is wrong with some people on that site) but still quite high. Again, much better deals on Yahoo Auctions and I don't need to take a train into Tokyo for them either!

 

The Super Potato in Ikebukuro is much better (but smaller). Great stock and no Akiba Gaijin tax.

 

I've never been, I'll have to check it out then. Do you know if they carry PC/Mac games?

I also had a good experience at the Super Potato in Ikebukuro. Much better than the Akiba location in terms of selection.

Retro games in Akiba are basically dead at this point, too many tourists, resellers and the area is so overrun by Anime that it's not a viable area for game hunting. It's just a place to go to to say you went there at this point, as far as retro gaming is concerned.

The company which I work for is in the talks about opening a shop in Akiba. Its focus will be mainly about Anime/Manga products, but It will have a small section of retro stuff. I will take care of it personally. My goal is to have competitive prices and good shape stuff, so you can find a small paradise in what's left in Akihabara. I will strive to make that section bigger, but in order to do so I will need your help, visiting the store and, if you will find something interesting, buying and supporting us! If this project will become reality, I will (with mod authorization, of course) make a small presentation and showcase of in progress status.

 

A new shop in Akiba selling retro games? Count me in! I'll definitely visit at some point if I'm still in Tokyo by the time it opens.

Definitely. E-commerce in Japan is years behind most of the West but even so it seems like the games side of Akihabara has lost more and more to the maid cafes and anime over the last few years and the growth of mobile plus Yahoo auctions and Amazon are probably at least partially responsible for that. It's a real shame.

 

There are a lot of PC games available in other stores in Akiba but I doubt that they're the type of games that most people on here would want.

Then yeah, there are no PC games to be found in there.
