I want to mod an hvc-cpu-07 famicom using this mod but the pinout is different on my board. On closer observation though, the motherboard has a labeled video ,vcc and gnd pin . Can I use these spots or am I gonna damage the board? This is the board I have https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/...5965745327725510034&oid=101780536203213953403
I used this schematic on mine and it works well. I believe it's the same one the AV Famicom uses. Not as good as the NESRGB board or the Hi Def NES HDMI mod but still looks better than RF. Here's a pinout of the PPU and the cart slot. You'll still have jailbars but that can be fixed by surrounding the PPU with grounded copper tape.
I had some time and tried both mods. The one you posted gives a rather dark image with buzzing sound (even though I soldered a capacitor οn the cartridge pin), while the one I found on the net doesn't work using the video and vcc pins on the board. I used a 320 Ω resistor instead of 300, as my local electronics stores didn't have one. I tapped 5 volts from the 7805 voltage regulator using a wire I attached on the resistor, as well I used the gnd pin to ground both the audio and video ground (both running on separate cables and ground wires) . For a transistor I used a 2N3906, but kept the one that is already on the motherboard. I'm not an expert on soldering, so is there any chance I did something wrong? Last but not least, I came up with this in one of my searches. http://www.otakus-store.net/en/content/12-famicom-av-kit . On what schematic is this amp based? I'm trying to decipher it, if this board gives a good image.
That's odd, it shouldn't be dark. I also used a 2N3906 transistor and I used a 330 ohm resistor instead of the 300 ohm one. Probably a stupid question but you did use a 110 ohm and a 220uf cap on the video output wire right? Are you getting composite video directly from the PPU or the RF's video input pin? I used the PPU pin and didn't get a dark image but using the RF's video pin may cause it. Can you post a picture of what you did? Also try a different TV if possible. As for the audio, I'm not getting buzzing on mine unless I turn up the volume too loud on my sound system. I'm not using any caps on the audio line and I also got audio from the cart slot. Try using a higher value cap. I've been told by a couple people that sometimes you need to experiment with different uf caps until you find one that removes the buzzing without muffling the sound.
Hmm I think we found the culprit! The 220uf capacitor was soldered on the cartridge pin instead of the the video out from the schematic. Boy I feel so dumb. I managed tough to burn the trace on the cartridge pin Still I am wondering on how I did this, as I didn't apply to much heat on this pin. I'll attempt to fix it though with a friend more experienced on electronics
Bumping this thread just to say that I av modded this famicom successfully! Image quality is nice with very slight visible jailbars . As for the sound, I didn't burn the trace . I fixed the annoying buzz. It was coming from the controller 2 microphone. I cleaned the contact for the volume switch on the controller port, as well scrubbed the metal pins on the switch itself. Now I have to find a way to open those damn carts so that I can give them a thorough clean...
