This one is for the gearheads of the forum. So my girlfriend is looking for a car and she found some guy in her neighbourhood is selling a Honda Civic thats almost new (less than a month old) and with no use at all. The thing is, when I went to look the engine it had HONDA written on it, but no VTEC at all, nor in the body. "Weird" I said, since my mom's CR-V has the Vtec logo in the engine and in both sides of the body. Now, the guy told me and my GF that Honda engines are all Vtec now and therefore they are no longer printing the logo all over the car. Is this true? does anyone has a 2006 Civic with no Vtec logo? or is this guy trying to sell a civic with an older, non-vtec engine? Is there any way to know if the engine has the Vtec? like an special component or part with a certain shape?
If the Civic is an EX trim level, then it has Vtec. The way you can tell for sure is by looking at the sticker. The sticker has the VIN#, model and should say the trim level (either DX, LX, or EX, or SI). DX and LX just have a 1.6L SOHC engine. The EX model has the 1.6LSOHC Vtec. SI models have the DOHC Vtec 1.6L. NExt time you see the car, take down the VIN number and do a carfax report. The valve covers will also say Vtec. Now, if you look at the car again and if you did the carfax report and report says that it is an EX model Civic, but the valve cover doesn't say Vtec on it, then I'd worry about the true history of the car. Because either the valve cover was either replaced with another one that they picked out in a junkyard or could be a different engine that was put in. I will double check on this to see if the vavle cover on the engine SHOULD say vtec or not on the SOHC engines, EX models.
Indeed, thats why I dont like buying used cars that arent certified... Thanks, BTW do you know if theres a site or something from were I could get photos of the different engines?
www.clubcivic.com I actually created a thread pertaining to this question. They have some nice pictures.
I dont know alot about Hondas, Im more of a Mitsu guy. however I dont think that all Hondas have stock V-tec's. I think they are still a option for top models of cars like civics. Be careful though. If it is a V-tech it has to have premium gas in it or it will retard the timing and make the car run like ass. So its going to be more expensive for the gas if it is V-Tec.
Thanks, BTW the trim level is EX automatic, and that guy is selling it at $11K which is a whooping $8K less than a new one. Also I cant see how honda missed the Vtec tags on this civic engine because "it isnt cool anymore" as the guy says, while the upcoming SI sedan has big logos on it: Anyway, maybe if I could see the SOHC (non-vtec) engine I could say if thats the one on the used civic. I know for once the guy isnt going to let me take a picture of it...
wow seems the major 3 imports also have fans on this forum. madhatter256 seems to be a honda fan micjohvan is a mitsubishi fan and I'm a nissan fan
pishaw! My worked Mustang GT will take any Honda iv'e yet seen on the road. ...has a feeling flame war shall ensue ;-)
Mustangs are good cars, just not camaros.;-) Nah. Civics are just one my favorites. There's also Lancer Evo7, MR2, Mustang Saleen, etc. Anyway, survey says that EX, LX trim level on the 06 have Vtec but it doesn't say on the valve cover. So the guy seems legit. That is a nice price for an 06 civic. Must have some high mileage on it if they want it for so low.
Yeah I cheked the forum last night, and believe it or not the car has only 120 miles. Dunno, one friend of mine got a chrysler 300 on the cheap becos the seller said the car was haunted:lol: Anyway, speaking of cars we like, on my list of "I think I can buy that" is the Lotus Elise, which no matter what people say, is one of the best cars out there.
I dont really care much for mustangs. No offense but I dont like their look and I think they are overrated and everyone in my town has one and thinks they are hot shit. Im not saying they arent fast but I see way to many of them in a day. I love muscle cars. Expecially old ones. Classic GTO, Barricude, and Stingrays. My first car was a Eclipse DSM so thats why I know alot about how to work on them. And you stick with what you know so I am a Mitsu guy.
hehe didn't wan to start a flame war just was voicing my opion on mustangs. I don't like them much I have always been a chevy man when it comes to american cars. But yes older cars are very nice I own a 1975 Olds Delta 88, 1985 Corvette, had a 1953 Chevy Bel Air. But GTO Judge is a car that is hard to beat when done correctly. And for mustangs I do like some GT350, GT500 (yeah who doesn't) 1971 Mach1, Lawman 429. Just about 5.0 and newer mustangs I don't like at all. Sonikku sorry but in that picture that stang looks like its got "junk in the trunk" (hope you know what that means) James
The trouble with American designed cars is the grill. What the heck is that all about anyway? Giant grills are horrific!
Honda doesn't write V-Tec on all it's engines. Take the all-new Civic Hybrid for instance or the Honda Insight... ;-) In your shoes I'd go and check with the nearest dealer and take the VIN-number with you to check there. ;-) Nahh muscle-cars are sooo old-school. Just wait a few years and you can't pay the gas to put into the tank. I prefer diesels or hybrids to the common gasoline-engine. I've had quite a lot of cars, mostly Hondas. My last Honda was an Insight (the car from "Be Cool") veryrare over here in Europe ! The current one is the German equivalent to the American Cadillac Catera but with a 2.2 litre Diesel-engine. I'm considering to get a Hybrid again, as GM suxx big-time. :banghead:
