I've just bought a Xbox 360 which came as a E74'ing unit, but is just still in the 3 year warranty for this to be fixed with the seal intact and never having been opened (MFG 2007/11/15). It's being sent to MS for repairs once it arrives.

    A few questions though:

    1. What's the best place to get a HDD caddy for it? I've seen dealextreme have some cheap $9 ones, but I'm not sure if they're to be trusted..

    2. What kind of HDD can I use? is there a list someplace of compatible drives? I'd like to put in a 320GB SATA (so I can use 250GB of it - right?).

    3. Another thing that comes to mind is, if the xbox was an arcade unit and not pro, will I need to do anything extra to get the HDD working on it? (how can I tell if it was an arcade or PRO unit?)

    4. What is the likelyhood of it RROD'ing again after MS repairs it? I will keep it in a well ventilated area unlike the previous owner.....

    Thanks in advance!

Arcade units have a matte plastic DVD drive tray endcap.

    Others have plated chrome.

Unless someone spent 10 seconds swapping the drive tray plate...

And the eject button? It hasn't been opened right? A hard drive will work on it regardless, afaik they have the same motherboard inside anyway.

Don't know about non stock hdd, call M$ and ask them if you can do that without being banned if you're going to play on Live.

Non official hard drives/sizes aren't supported. It is possible to hack a 3rd party drive to work, but it must be a certain brand and must be one of the already offered sizes.

I believe the drives that people have got to work are western digital, although the exact model is escaping me.

Ive had a non oem hardrive for a while now (Still not banned), and it has to be western digital BEVS series, look at the hddhacker readme and it will tell you exactly which of the BEVS models work with it.

I've been running a 120GB BEVS HDD in a 20GB caddy for years now, and I've never had any trouble.
