I've mentioned this in the Famiclone thread, but as it has now been posted "officially" on the Hardcore Gaming 101 Games of the World section, I'd like to plug it more explicitly. I'm trying to create the definitive resource on old Korean games, of which I recently finished the first part. http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/korea/korea.htm The main article generally describes the history of game development in Korea, but it is also a compendium of many things gaming overall, with a ton of appendices and specials. Meet some of the first Korean game developers. Get to know obscure companies. See what devices Koreans used to play their games on. Learn about the many games released exclusively on the southern half of a small peninsula in East Asia. ... and a few games not even released there, possibly seen on the internet for the first time ever. This is not made to be readable in one session, but next time you want to find out anything about Korean games, you'll know where to go.* *At least after the project is finished in its entirety. As of now the article covers the years from 197x to 1993. (Inside of the company profiles, newer games are also introduced, though.) I'm planning at least two more parts in the future (covering 1994-1997 and 1998-2004/5).
Good article, very interesting. Here in Argentina one arcade game is very popular, it's from korea and it's named "Pump it Up". It's a Dance Dance Revolution clone. AFAIK, the developer, ANDAMIRO, has more arcade, pc and console games.
Very interesting thanks, I was nearly tempted to download Lineage II, ive never played an MMORPG even.
Great read. There's not a lot on the net about Korean gaming so this is a great place to start. Yakumo
Amazing work. Videogames can be a very popular medium but its historic preservation is still lacking. So true that's baffling.
Amazing thats exactly what i was looking for! im off to korea for a month in a couple of days, been trying to find shops etc that will stock korean games but so far have come up short. Any suggestions?
Amazing research. A real achievement for the gaming scene, big kudos! I'm really looking forward for the rest of the article
The latest update for this article includes an interesting interview with two veterans of the Korean gaming industry: http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/korea/specials/interview-mirinae.htm
