Hi everyone. I have been troubled by an old game from my childhood as of late. A game that I remember very well but have been unable to track down, I have search everything I could think of on Google so no I'll try and ask you guys I you can name this game. I'm 90% sure that it was a PS1 game. It is a shoot-em-up, it had some top view parts like in Raiden, it also featured sidescrolling level, but most intestingly (I think) was some levels where you flew into the screen, I believe the background most have been mostly FMV. You control a space ship, and I remember the first level being an astroid field with some very large astroids, you had some cool bombs that could take care of most things on the screen. Unfortunatly I can't provide any screenshots from the game, like I said, I have being searching Google for any info but couldn't find any. I remember me and my dad playing that game all the time. However, I'm actually not sure if it supported 2 players... If anyone can think of a game that fit's the description I would love to hear. Thanks everyone.
Dang, I didn't expect such a quick response Yes, that is definitly the game I've been searching for. Very strange why it never showed up on any of the SHMUP lists I found for the PSX :/ Now I just have to find one on Ebay, fortunatly it isn't too expensive. Thank you very much guys. I relly appriciate the help, It has frustrated me to no end that I didn't know the name of the game ^^;
Totally forgotten about this game which I couldn't even complete this game in my early days. I will go back and play this.
Philosoma is an ok shooter, but I never understood where all the hype comes from. The cutscenes are pretty trashy and the shooting stages themselves are pretty damn standard. Sure, it changes perspective a lot, but so did Salamander 11 years earlier. The 3D backgrounds look horrible (compared to e.g. Thunderforce V) and the strategy involved is pretty bland compared to arcade shooters of that era. Back at the time it was hyped in magazines as the masterpiece in 2D shooting, which I find absolutely retarded. They even criticized milestone Battle Garegga for not being as 'innovative' as that piece of shit Philosome (well, at least compared to Garegga it sort of is)
I'd have to agree that Philosoma is an ok shooter. It reminded me of a pumped up 3DO title with the heavy reliance on cd technology via voice scripting. The graphics are clunky and environments are sparse. Personally, it didn't have the frenetic pace that usually comes with shumps, even from that era. It does shine as a historical piece, opening up shumps to 3-D and big production values. It could be described as a cousin to slipheed. Worth trying out. I am presently enjoying G-Darius, which personally is my favorite of the Darius series, Ray Crisis and Ray storm, both smashing forces of Shump goodness. Raiden DX, which is solid plus Gekioh shooting king. Don't forget Xevious 3-D! Oh, let's not forget the zany harmful park, 100% cotton and sexy parodius. Playstation one had some good shumps.
Indeed... the PS1 had many amazing exclusives. I tend to be a Saturn person because I just love Garegga and Batsugun (which are both Saturn exclusive), but Harmful Park and Gradius Gaiden are exceptional masterpieces and there are many more - Gaia Seed, DoDonPachi (superior version), Zanac X Zanac, Toaplan Shooting Battle, R-Types & R-Type Delta... Raiden Project & DX are essential purchases as well, and then there are many exclusive classic compilations (i.e. Sunsoft Memorial, Namco Museums...) As for Gekioh Shooting King (Shienryu), it's actually a pretty bad port because it does not offer a vertical screen option. For Shienryu in particular, it's really hard to cope with a crammed horizontal screen because so much is going on and there are tons of particles that resemble bullets. The Saturn-version is technically way superior, although it does lack the nice and funny color schemes the PSX-version offers. A combination of both would've been awesome, but well, you can't have everything in life.
Dunno, there were other shooters before it that already did that, like Microcosm and the semi-sequel Novastorm. I have to agree that Philosoma isn't that good.
Well, I didn't want to flush the game down the toilet, considering it's the game he grew up playing with his dad so I thought to add something redeeming. Ave: I completely forgot about gradius gaiden and there is also einhander. I will have to check out Gaia Seed. Edit: Philosoma was one of the first games developed for Sony's Playstation videogame console.
Microcosm and Novastorm would be classified as rail shooters I'd say. They don't have much in common with 2D-shooters... and yeah, there was always some earlier game, but in case you don't want to go all the way back to Zaxxon, you'll have to admit that Philosoma pretty much marked the transition to polygon graphics in 2D-shooter.
Sometime don't matter how bad game is, if you did enjoy the game in childhood time, it always be memorable.
I think it's a fun action game, but also a bit stiff and complex. I think it's a great action game, but mediocre compared when compared to other 2D shooters.
Bleemed Einhander looks amazing. I just got Thunder force V, I'll take more features over lower resolution and less graphical effects.
