Ok this place needs some education Ok i know you guys don´t need the education, but a common mistake has now become a recent discovery . anyway now I can say loudly without being angry. THE VIKINGS DID NOT HAVE HORNS IN THEIR HATS ! :icon_bigg I felt it was very irritating whenever I saw a program with vikings(commercial wise). The vikings had horns in their helmets, and it in kind of way pissed me off. But now I just google searched for the words "viking helmets" and a site popped up twice and I read " It has been recently discovered that the real Viking Helmets did not have horns." But I have always known that the Vikings did not have horns in their helmets, and the horned helmet I think of, is from the bronze age, and the horns was a tourist trap. "Let me say, right off, to the historical purists, and, for that matter, to all readers, that we are aware that the prevailing belief among Viking scholars is that these hats, when worn in antiquity did not have horns. We in no way want to offend "the truth" about Viking helmets. With that being said, whether it is Wagnerian opera fans or Minnesota Vikings football fans." But perhaps the vikings did have "horns in their trousers", but that is another story and a NWS marked one ;-).
im guessing it was to make them look more barbarec, who knows maybe schoolars will think the ipod was a magically book or map.
Well, as long you don´t say their favorite hobby was going out and plunder and raping (thanks Monster Garage for taking the music where they say that :-( ). When most of them were farmers and when they went out on seafaring on their ships, most of them traded goods, and the raping and plundering was not something many vikings did, and it was not well looked upon from other vikings either.
Well, that is another story, both the vikings and the samurais had swords, but the quality of the ancients swords werent better than the Japanese swords today, because today we have the technology to improve the steels quality. But I am not saying the ancient samurai swords werent good . But they are not so legendary as the legends are telling they are. But at least you can be proud of saying, you maybe have viking blood, because of your heritage sir
Well, seeing as the word "viking" means to plunder and such, then all of the vikings actually did do those things as they "went out a viking". "Viking", as the Norse used it, is actually a verb. You are right though, the people of the vikings were generally peaceful and were mostly farmers. They created the first parliment system and were great explorers, creating some of the most advanced ships of not only their time, but for years after the slow dissolution of their empire/culture. The Norse people actually assimilated into most of the society/cultures that they had conquered. Modern English was formed from a fusing of Norse and Old English. Anyway, the whole notion about the vikings not having horned helmets has been known to scholars for quite a long time. The idea that they wore horns actually came from a series of Norse statues that were found to have horned helmets. The statues, however, depicted the enemies of the vikings (both real and imaginary I believe) and not the vikings themselves. Popular misconception by the so called masses is what leads to the continued use of the image. There are many things in history that have turned out this way. If anyone cares, I'll mention a few. No one in history (at least as far as philosophers/alchemists/scientists and such) ever thought that the world was flat. In fact the ancient Egyptians and Greeks knew for a fact that the world was round and had calculated the circumfrence. The Victorians decided that people used to think that the world was flat, and the idea has propogated. Amerigo Vespucci (I don't know if I spealt that right), whom the American continents are named after (mostly because he made a claim that he found them first, and wrote a book detailing his adventures) not only never set foot on either of the Americas, he never once left his home country. The idea that the Great Wall of China is the only man made object on Earth that can be seen from the surface of the moon is not true. There are no man made objects on Earth that can be seen from the surface of the moon. The person whom first stated that you could see the Great Wall from the moon was the man whom ordered it built. He had a dream in which he rode a balloon to the moon and could see the wall. Like you Wolverine, I too get upset when people/media continue to say these kinds of things. (By the way, I hope my post isn't comming off as abrasive or annoying, because it is definitely not meant to be.)
samael64: He he no worries I also "hate" the thing with the moon, and also that somebody said to me and some people still think that liquorice is made of horseblood(my first teacher said it :-S), when it is made of the liquorice root. Or for that matter when people said that winegums were made of whalebones, and the "truth" in that could be it is made out of gelantine(the main ingredient) . And the muslims in Denmark went very freaky when they found out. That they were eating pork gelantine. No this is not a religion discussion. But now the danes are making wine gums out of gelantine from seaweed. Heck I remember a bitch by the named Connie Sander once told me you could see the great wall from the surface on the moon, and I said no way ! And showed her an article in Illustrated Science that said you couldn´t.
I think this is the reason, why people assume the vikings had horns. But I won´t tell the long story about the statue, but I can say that the statue is very near The Copenhagen Central Station. (Hovedbanegården is the Danish name for it. Or Københavns Hovedbanegård, since in Aarhus they have a central station too). I just can´t see the horns. But on one of the statues in Copenhagen, they have horns. and "the lur" is a very old muscial instrument. But the statue right next to Copenhagens Cityhall
Re the Great Wall of China - spot on mate. Its the last man made object you can see as you leave earth going into space.
the moon is 384.000 KM from The Earth. and when you are more than 305 KM and above The Earth you can´t see the wall. And even then, it is very hard to see it. Because it blends in with the surroundings. That means 304 KM from The Earth you have to know where to look. http://www.netprofessor.dk/artikler.asp?id=1257
Funny things is, that in "The Thirteenth Warrior" you hear the Hulk Hogan stunt double/standin Asbjørn Riis saying in pure Danish with the Jutland dialect "Kun En Araber Tager En Hund Med I Krig". (I am only capitalising the letters so you know what line I am talking about ). Only an Arab would put a dog to war and the u in kun is how we danes are pronouncing the letter å.
 Vicky the Viking ! Oh, I loved that when I was a young boy  I never quite knew if Vicky was a boy or a girl though. I think I ended up thinking it was a girl. Yakumo
Silly revisionist history. I suppose next someone will be trying to tell us that these aren't historically accurate Gauls or some such rubbish.
