I bought my first Xbox (A Limited Edition Crystal one) the other day and I've looked all over the internet and I can't find any easy sounding softmod install options?? Are there any?? Or are there any other options I can do instead of this?? I seen the terms "turn a retail console into a debug" on here and don't really understand what that means, could someone please explain this to me?? Thanks PS2Guy.
When I did a softmod years and years ago I used mechassault to trigger the exploit and installed the softmod, xbox scene should have plenty of tutorials or even youtube. If your xbox is not a v1.6 I would recommend to tsop mod it,with this mod you basically flash a modified bios. As for retail to debug kit once your xbox is softmodded you can load up the xdk dash, xbox scene should have a guide or if your xbox is tsop modded or has a modchip you can flash a modified bios to boot the xdk dash on bootup,I haven't messed with the original xbox in quite sometime so someone else here should know a lot more on the subject.
If you've got a crystal xbox, it's either 1.5 or 1.6. I've got the same, and I exploited mine using an XBOX -> USB thing (basically a USB hub with the USB cable replaced with an xbox one) as a memory card and moving a save game exploit over to it, and exploted james bond: agent under fire.
I do this to all my friends 1.6 XBOX's, as my other methods don't typically work on 1.6 XBOX's. http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=496263 If you have the equipment, it's pretty simple to do. But most people around these parts will have all the equipment. All you really need is a DVD burner, a computer with 2 IDE slot, and you have to be able to open your XBOX. It does take some awkward positioning because you have to basically sit your XBOX right next to your XBOX. And after you get it done, you can install Evox and XBMC and stuff. Edit: The retail-to-debug mod can be a pretty difficult to do for your first time. But it does basically turn your XBOX into a full debug kit minus the 128mb of RAM.
I just put in modchips myself. You'll need one if anything goes wrong with a TSOP flash. Been buying IDE->SATA adapters from eBay lately so there is no need to worry about HDDs either.
I would be more worried about wrecking the motherboard. I'm not really familiar with soldering irons and wires and stuff like that. I can get one installed though, there's people on sella.co.nz (one of our auction sites) that do it, it's a duox2 chip??
Yep. I've got a Duo X2 in my main XBox as they have 2 banks for different BIOSes (I leave one alone with the default as it is great for recovery of screw-ups) and they're cheap. Installing one is really easy but you could easily mess up D0 and that would be REALLY bad.
APE, Can you share the link of the auction(s)? I want to make sure I buy ones that will work. Thanks.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/PATA-IDE-SA...943?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cb98e42d7 This looks like the one I've bought previously though it could easily have different components on it. Thing is compatibility is dependent on the HDD itself as well as the IDE controller on the system. The one I have has worked with both XBoxes I have and two different SATA drives but it wouldn't surprise me to find out compatibility is limited.
I installed my softmod with a hotswap method. Although my original dash went *poof!*. I can still use UnleashX.
