It is NOT talking about the 360. http://revolution.ign.com/articles/673/673578p1.html http://revolution.ign.com/articles/673/673799p1.html
Can't wait. I'm getting more and more excited about the Revo as time goes on. Price will be a big factor in the (hopeful) success of this console. I think Nintendo is being smart about not directly competing with Sony and MS.
you guys think the little box will be able to make 360 like games? i mean... is rendering @ 480p... so..
That's the point...it's not meant to compete directly with the 360 or PS3. Because of the lower specs, price will be significantly lower and so many might choose to get one of the top consoles (360 or PS3) and get the revo as well for the relatively cheap fun factor. Graphics aren't the holy grail of gaming even though many think that way. No wonder why many still prefer playing these older systems (NES, SNES) because they had games that can rival the graphic gems of today in the fun department. As a sidenote, my favorite game of all time is A Link to the Past on the SNES.
I don't know if Nintendo can keep "not competing" with Sony and Microsoft. Earlier they were making the DS to not compete with the PSP and now this. But as the articles also states, Nintendo is going for a low price and innovative gameplay. Not exactly a bad thing. Another thing, imho, is that a lot of games out don't even make use of the highest levels of graphics that can be achieved on any given system. Sure there are some done very well, but for every 'high-end' visual game there are 20+ mediocre looking games. Though I know there are many reasons for this. The lesser power might not be so much a factor for some people. A good looking game that is crap to play won't get too far (usually). Another point is that Zelda: Twilight Princess is most likely going to look incredible even if it is on the less powerful Gamecube. Although the lesser RAM and slower speed will be more noticable in framerate and overall smoothness of the game. That is something I had hoped they would boost a bit more for the Rev. But it's hard to judge til you get to play it, I guess. Sorry I kind of bounced around, but I think all of that remained on-topic ;-) All in all, I'm still looking forward to the Revolution. I'm sure I'll end up with one sometime. And if the price is $150 or less, it won't be hard to talk myself into getting one at launch. I can't speak for anyone else, but I know I'll probably end up with all 3 consoles someday (like when I get the money). So I don't really care about the console battles. They'll all have their pros and cons. Sure I'll end up with a favorite console, but even if that ends up being the 360, I can't play any new Zelda or Mario Kart (or mario platformer) on a 360.
"Third parties have revealed to us that the console will top out with 128MBs of RAM, and possibly even less." I just flat out don't believe this statement to be true. "Hollywood GPU's on-board memory, said to be 3MBs by sources" Are they talking about V-Ram? If so, I call more BS. "Recent rumors suggesting that the discs can hold 12GBs of data are false. In fact, Revolution discs can store 4.7GBs of data on a single layer or 8.5GBs when double-layered on a single-side." Their they go again, trying to create rumors by acting like their 'reliable sources' are giving them the facts. Also, why would they want to use media that was so similar to dvd in its limitations? I could see this in no other way then to be an invitation to piracy. "Every developer was in agreement that Revolution should launch with a price tag of $149 or lower. Some speculated that based on the tech, a $99 price point would not be out of the question." Now thats just laughably stupid. Sorry, but it seems like ign-revolution is just talking out of its ass at this point.
-128MB is realistic when you consider the xbox has 64MB -3MB is the actual memory located on the die of the GPU (for framebuffer and such)...not the same as VRAM -it is possible that the 128MB reffered to will be used like the UMA on the xbox. The system ram is shared by both the application and the graphics processor
Not when you consider the 360 has 512, and the fact that its one of those things devs are always clammoring for (and Rev supposedly is all about making it better for devs). That makes far more sense. Its possible, but again limited ram doesn't bode well for developers. And limiting devs is one of the last things N' wants to do.
Except for the fact that it has now walloped the psp and the psp is doing very poor in sales, god i was at best buy today and they had a shitload of value pack psps sitting there, while they sold most of their mario kart ds packs. Point is they could be repeating same thing they did with ds, i think its very smart of them not to go directly against them and have their own thing, plus the emu is sold on alot of people, it baisicly be the video game version of itunes.
Yeah, last I checked DS is pwnzing the PSP at North American retail. As Assembler said in another thread he made, the visual "wow" factor between this new generation and the current one isn't as much as a gap as it used to be between hardware generations, it's all nuances. If Nintendo can put a console out there that's less than half the price of the competition but still looks essentially as good as the competitions' launch titles, they stand a very good chance of selling a ton of units even leaving aside the "revolutionary" factors. I'd still like more RAM and HD support though, but I'd be happy with just the 720p.
Yes I agree, that's why I said: I figured the rest of my post would make it pretty clear that I thought Nintendo had an OK strategy. But I know it was a pretty long winded post with no sense of direction. My point was, competition can bring out the best (but sometimes worst) in just about everything. Nintendo might want to challenge Sony or MS on some level instead of just being kinda wimpy and saying they don't want to compete with the other "big boys"
