I've noticed people naming everything they sell rare. It's pretty much screwed up any chance of finding real rare items on ebay by using the rare tag alone. Check out this bullshit: http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZsamtronkillQQhtZ-1
Tetris Nintendo DS LITE Video Game New Rare NES HOT Crazy shit, it's indeed a Video Game. And new (no, actually it's not but anyway!!), RARE because everyone knows and has played it, furthermore there is some relation to the NES and WOW: it's HOT as well! I don't get what some people want to express with that. I never used terms like "rare" or "video game" to search for games. If I want a rare video game, I know its title and type it in, it's as easy as that isn't it? Words like rare are normally ignored by me but I don't exclude them from my searches. There are still some items that are really rare and advertised as such, so did I with certain things (that were really rare, like a sealed PAL samba de amigo boxset...).
I don't use eBay anymore. On the other hand, I've never relied on other people's descriptions to evaluate what's actually rare. Generally, I'll buy things I want to have, and their perceived or actual rarity is an afterthought and not a motivating factor. A declarative 'Rare!' statement goes out my other ear along with all the other usual advertising hyperbole. Not to hijack the thread, but did anybody get their Paypal class action payment yet? I sent in my form well ahead of the December deadline, but I haven't seen any money yet.
It's the *SUPER RARE* and *MEGA RARE OMG!* that take the biscuit. Don't get me started on people who use WOW! in the title.
lol, probably read one those dumb ass books of how to make money on ebay. Or took an ebay class (which is offered at local county college) "how to sell on ebay"
People posting everything as "Rare" does piss me off but not as much as the people who post things like "Not NES SNES Genesis" so it clogs up your search with crap you're not looking for.
I hate the word rare being used for everything i see on ebay even though i know its not. The one thing i really hate is when people put "is still brand-new complete" but then says "but does not include booklets and case." so then its not complete.
It would be interesting for RARE to end up being protected by banning the use of all-caps 'RARE' in descriptions =P
OMG RARE SUPER MARIO 64 N64 OMG RARE SUPER MARIO WORLD SNES OMG RARE SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 GENESIS I see it all the time especially with these. like wtf? the common as hell they were bundled with the systems how are they rare and if there so rare why do i have 3 copies of mario 64 laying around 2 of sonic 2 and a buttload of SMW?
As I think I mentioned before, I once tried to find out what search term would get the most hits on Ebay, and "RARE" was by far the highest. :banghead: But I actually like it when I see "RARE" because then I know the seller's an idiot and can plan accordingly ;-)
It's "L@@K" and "cHeCk It OuT" that get on my nerves. Am I supposed to be more willing to look because you type like a pre-teen? This crap is all over craigslist and local sites too now.
Serious. Even more frustrating are the terms "new" and "mint." I don't know how many items I've purchased that were hailed to be mint and when I had inspected them I found them to be tatty. Or the wonderful self-defeating descriptions where the seller says something like "NEW!!! I only played it once!" I'm a peaceable guy and stuff like this still really boils my blood (regardless of whether it's ignorance or deceit). -ud
I bought a game like that. I was told, "mint means it works, and doesn't have any rips in the manual". Uh... thanks.
If I have to ebay, I always filter on highest price first. Most of the time, real items are priced more than these so-called "rare" junk.
