Or maybe they needed the actual extra power to keep dveeloping games without having to resort to new hardware. The voodoo chipset was capable of far more then it was ever used for, my voodo 2 SLI setup ran my games far into 2002 while the card was already 4-5 years old because i was using overclocking utilities.
Maybe the weren't at the point of getting all the power into single chip sollutions so there was the need to buddel 5 cards. If they are all PCI connectors in theory they should be able to work together as one unit but it's still puzzeling.
I'd say build a crappy little PC out of odd's and ends and plug the puppies in! obviously you won't get the intended benefits without any software they wrote for it, but would be interesting to see some performance results from it.
It used to be possible with a lot of 3dfx stuff to run dual graphics cards. Think dual processor pc but GPU instead and you have a powerfull system for 3d model work :smt023 Not many newer graphics cards support dual mode nor many games (Diablo 2 does though :-D ) but PCI-X means most newer cards will be able to run in dual mode. I imagine this is what they did to save money, as stuff like the FireGL costs a shitload of money when they could have just got 2 cheaper cards in a dual mode for a shitload less :smt043
Well that depends they tested a gf6600 in SLI and it was alsmot as fast as a single GF6800 but still for the money 2 6600 costs you can buy a gf6800 so it has no use. Still my creative voodoo II 12 mb sli setup really kicked ass in quake 2,3 and unreal back in the days :-D
FireGL and similar shit is like $1k upwards though , so even spending $500 on 2 cards still woulda been cheaper :smt045
