Question for anyone who has a Gamecube Action Replay (with memory card)... I had the Action Replay MAX, which I used for years, but I need to buy a replacement. People are charging ridiculous amounts for the disc/card online, though, which is where my question comes in... I remember being able to use a standard Gamecube memory card in place of the Action Replay memory card. However, I'm not sure if it was after copying the AR data to another card after already saving to the "real" AR card. Basically, I would rather just buy the disc and use an official card for the code data (the Datel cards are cheap pieces of junk anyway). Thanks in advance.
I actually have the card here with no disc, I thought about tracking down a disc but wasn't really worth the hassle for me as i wouldnt really use it. Trade ya for something if you want?
If you actually need it that is, you dont actually say if you do, I just get the impression thats what your after
I use a backup copy of AR with a plain old memory card, no dongle. That said, it may be the case that only later version of AR work without the disc...
The purple AR card is not detected as a memory card. Nintendo's memory manager won't recognize it at all. I haven't tried 3rd party tools to somehow copy its data to a regular memory card, to see if that's supported by older AR versions.
I ended up buying the disc of an older version of AR online, so I guess I'll just have to test it myself. It's not the end of the world if I end up having to get the card for it, but for now, I'll take my chances. I discovered that I actually did copy my old AR Max data to one of my memory cards, but that probably won't do me much good with the older AR disc. Unless it somehow recognizes it enough to tell me that I need to format the "hardware."
In case anybody is interested to know, I recently received my Action Replay disc, and I can confirm that it works perfectly without the AR Card. I used a standard 59 block official Gamecube card. I didn't have to format anything, I just deleted the saves on the card, and the Action Replay saved to it normally. Honestly, it's better to do this than to use the Datel hardware, anyway, because you can still copy the AR data from the official memory card. The particular Action Replay is v1.07. On a side note, the older versions of Action Replay seem to run at 30 FPS, versus the 60 FPS performance of the Action Replay MAX (rough estimates). So far, that's the only notable difference I've encountered between the two (and I say that lightly, since I doubt most people care about FPS when navigating menus). I'm not even sure what the selling point of the AR MAX was supposed to be, but I think it was the fact that you could save game data to the memory card? Well, you can do that anyway if you just use a standard card.
