Before I start, this isn't a flame thread. I have nothing against him. I'm just genuinely curious. What is it with his movies? he made a couple movies people really like and then there's a kajillion others everyone hates, but if everyone hates those movies then why are they still made? surely there is an audience for his kinda humor? I mean come on, if people didn't like his movies then common sense would mean nobody would go see his movies and if nobody went to see his movies then he'd stop making movies but there's still new ones coming nearly every year. The last adam sandler movie I watched was 50 first dates which I liked a great lot but that's nearly ten years ago. Would it happen that the critics rate his movies poorly while everyone else actually, I don't know, like them?
His newer movies fall into the 'family comedy' category of movies which generally speaking always sell, if I had to guess without writing a long post.
Firstly he's dumbed down his comedy a lot. It now appeals to the lowest common denominator of comedy fans, secondly, he's incredibly inconsistent, he put out 3 great movies in a row in 2005/6 and then dropped some real stinkers in Reign over me and king of queens.
I like Happy Gilmore, but never underestimate how much of an audience there is for terrible comedies: after all, there were six progressively worse Police Academy sequels.
He's actually made some good movies since 50 First Dates, although some of them you do have to be into that sort of comedy, I guess. He can be quite repetitive in his acting style and has made some real duffers, but there will always be people who like even the most idiotic of movies. Uwe Boll still makes movies... somehow! However, if you think that's all he can make, just look at his next film after 50 First Dates - Spanglish. Great film. And Punch-Drunk Love. If you've ever seen Sandler's first movie, you'll have been asking how the hell he got a second chance for a long time!! Strip away the overdone stupidity that often comes with a Sandler character (I certainly prefer him when he's not putting on a childish voice), and there's usually an average-schmuck-does-good storyline. I guess people can relate to that element of his films... or aspire to be like that! I don't think you can say that he's dumbed down his comedy. Look at the earlier movies that made him popular - the likes of Billy Madison, The Water Boy and Little Nicky. How much dumber can you get than a character who talks and acts like a kid? And King of Queens - really? That's a TV show, not a movie, in which he made a guest appearance in one episode in season 9 (which proves it's a popular show already). And what's so bad about Reign Over Me? Surely Jack and Jill is his REAL modern stinker?! In fact, he was in Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo during that period you mentioned, which was pretty bad.
Some of his films are good Little Nicky Happy Gilmore Mr Deeds Click 50 First Dates The Wedding Singer The Waterboy Billy Madison all great films, havent really seen any of the others but doesnt sound like im missing much
The two I remember the most from my childhood are Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison. I also remember him in Airheads and Bulletproof. Happy Gilmore is my all time favorite of Adam Sandler movies.
Adam Sandler movies are among the worst comedies ever made. Very unfunny, boring and dull no-brainers.
Only one I like is Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore. Rest of them are something you'd watch on TV on a Sunday night...
Click in all honesty is the only film of his I can safely say I enjoy anymore..though the ending kinda ruins the whole film.
For those who don't like Adam Sandler, try Spanglish or Punch-Drunk Love. They're his more serious films. Likewise, if you're not a fan of Will Ferrell, you should check out Everything Must Go. I watched that last night, and was very surprised. Both are alright at what they do, but even if you're a fan, they can get a little stale and repetitive. Adam Sandler's the hopeless schmuck who does good, Will Ferrell's always going to start shouting in an over-the-top fashion sooner or later. Their serious acting is quite a refreshing change, though.
Stop looking at me swan! Edit: Completely agree with you El Hex, those are my favourites. Click scared me away for good though. Anger Management wasn't bad though was it?
Hahaha, SWAN!!! Well, Click was good until the end I mean it killed away all the laughter that was built during the movie. If the ending is horrible, then the whole movie is bad. How I see it anyway...
Check out Punch Drunk Love. Kind of odd to see him in a Paul Thomas Anderson film... he still manages to be Sandlerish, though.
