From 1UP Wired had an article a few days ago praising Hollywood for having grown up a little and for finally starting portray games and gamers as more than slack-jawed idiots or psychopathic killers. Now Adam Sandler's production company is coming out with a film, Grandma's Boy, about a 36-year-old game tester/aspiring developer and his mad-cap hilarious adventures of arrested development. Check out the trailer to see more. It's not exactly clear from the trailer whether the guy works at a game development company or a game magazine, but he is that "lovable loser" archetype that, well, some may not find so lovable. Once again, however, gamers seem to be portrayed as children trapped in adult bodies. Well, it is a comedy after all; but dare we hope for at least one gamer-character who isn't a total freak? Granted, it's all in good fun. Adam Sandler isn't exactly known for his nuanced character development (except as an actor in the excellent film Punch Drunk Love). But what's up with the GameInformer posters that decorate the walls of the office where the protagonist works? Hm.
