I have a PS1 SCPH-7501 and would like to play some lightgun games. However, I'm outputting video via a sync on luma SCART cable without a composite connector. I really don't want to dissect my high-quality SCART cable (for fear of damaging it) and I can't fork out the cash for a new cable. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think my best (and most affordable) option is to add a separate composite video port to the back of my system. I'm okay with a soldering iron so I'm not too worried about the physical installation; I'm more concerned with the potential pitfalls. Here come my questions: Can I achieve this by connecting an RCA jack to AV multi-out pin 6 (somewhere inside the PS1) for composite video and pin 8 for ground? Would this cause any potential issues with my RGB output? Should my PS1 still be outputting composite via pin 6 while using a sync on luma RGB cable? Have I overlooked something super-obvious when in fact there's a much easier / better solution? Thanks in advance for your help and knowledge!
1. Yes. 2. No. 3. PS1 video encoder outputs all available signals at the same time. One thing that can be changed from one game to another is NTSC/PAL mode. Thats not affect your target. 4. Just solder 2 wire and make them go throw ventilation cuts at the right side of PS1 (neer the parallel port). There is no need to drill holes in it. The second way (if it duplicate all multiav pins): https://www.neogaf.com/threads/is-it-possible-to-use-guncon-2s-with-svideo-or-component.386825/
You don't need to mod the console at all. You can get an adapter for SCART that has breakouts for RCA and S-Video while still allowing a SCART pass-through for RGB. Iirc, something like this should work, but I cannot guarantee it since I don't use SCART for RGB on my PS1 (I've got a PS2 component cable with extra connectors for S-Video and Composite video to use with my PVM). Heck, you could even make an adapter if you bought the parts. If you use an adapter like that, the composite jack will output Luma but the light guns will work fine. I use Luma for my GunCon 1/2. If you do mod the console, let us know how it comes out.
I bought an off-brand adapter at the flea market for $5. [GALLERY=media, 2504]Off-brand A/V Adapter by sammyrms1 posted Feb 14, 2018 at 4:48 PM[/GALLERY] [GALLERY=media, 2505]Off-brand A/V Adapter 2 by sammyrms1 posted Feb 14, 2018 at 4:48 PM[/GALLERY]
Huh, I didn't know they were that cheap. I remember them being rare and expensive... Maybe I'm thinking of the PS2 version with S-Video?
Thanks but that won't work because I'm using luma for sync. There's no composite going through my SCART cable.
You don't need composite. Lightguns only require the sync signal. They have sync strippers in them. Luma works perfectly fine. Heck, you could even send pure C-Sync directly if you did the C-Sync mod. Also I found this for somewhat cheaper: https://www.ebay.com/itm/PS2-PS3-PS...564640?hash=item28219c0420:g:I54AAOSwgn5XEluH
Hadn't considered that. My SCART switch already has a composite out so that should be perfect. Thanks!
Another option, which I use with PS2 over Component, is to get one of the Y-cables that they sold with the Guncon 2. Then plug the component (green) plug into that thing at the back of the TV or switch box. It's pretty long, too. Then plug the Guncon 1/2 yellow plug into that.
I suppose this could also work for me since I'm converting RGB to component and the Y signal carries luma. I'll keep this in mind if the composite output on my SCART switch isn't sufficient. Thanks!
