    Hi guys,
Have a bit of a strange one. Been messing with SATA to IDE adapters and finally found one that works pretty good.
I have upgrade a couple of XBOX with 500GB SATA drives no problems but now I have come across a bit of a problem with a few of the drives I have.
Looks like that the drive does not spin up in time before the XBOX throws up a error 09. I suspected this and powered the sata to IDE adapter using an external molex power supply I have and then fire up the XBOX and it works all perfect.
I read on some other forum someone mentioned to add an external power switch to give the drive power first before you fire up the XBOX. I did some poking around but could only find 5V active on the XBOX power supply while the XBOX was not running.
Anyone know where I can grab 12V needed or an alternative to my problem? I know some will say try another drive but I really don't have the funds at the moment to start buying SATA drives to test.

Thanks for that. I already have one of these. That is how I found out it was a drive spin up issue.
I cannot find the thread on the other forum now but it was definitely mentioned that an additional switch could be installed and not using an additional PS.

You're right about ERROR 09. I get that sometimes with my IDE drives. This is why I don't believe this is really caused by your SATA drives at all. Just make sure the power plug is pushed right in the HDD. Otherwise it will give you an error. I've currently got a WD 80GB drive my XBOX 1.1 and every now and then the drive will power down, when I reseat the power to the drive it works fine again without any problems. My IDE drive spins up halfway into the 'flubber' sequence. Any way, best of luck man.

There is no 12v active when the console is off.

You could implement something that once the xbox is powered, it resets the console after 1-2 seconds - letting the hdd spin up.

But it seems a bit of a hassle - just get a different drive?

Also, I suppose you could edit the bios and change the boot path.

Each bios has like 3 places it checks for a boot xbe, you could add 2 other ones first and then your real one on the HDD as last - hopefully that adds enough time to the boot sequence for the drive to spin up fully.

Isn't there an extended media check option in the BIOS settings? I know having a DVD in the drive allows extra time at the BIOS screen. Just set auto-start DVD to false.

    Try this:

Boot up xbox, when you get the error - pull out the AV lead and then reconnect. Should do a soft reboot and hopefully work.

If so, you could write something on a PIC that does pretty much the same thing automatically after 2 seconds.

But again, I stand by the fact this seems like a lot of hassle.

I'd just save up for another Hard Disk, but you know people like to do things differently.

    Thanks everyone.

Just on this. How could I rig up a reset button? Which points would I need to pull low or high? From here a simple pic program could be written to reset the system after say 2 seconds.
