Hiyas! I'm getting frustrated trying to find an S-Video cable for these model 1 Sega Saturns I have. So I'm looking here at this unused soldering iron and wondering if there's a good guide on how to solder in the wiring to get S-Video out for the Saturn? I guess the reason why i'm posting is mainly to get an idea of how difficult this might be for someone who's never soldered anything. I'm electronically-oriented and not exactly ham-handed
it's possible to get composite easily out of a saturn, although i've not looked into s-video as i use RGB scart for saturn output. but you can pull all the sources from the pins or TP's for the AV port on the motherboard some links: http://www.gamesx.com/avpinouts/saturnav.htm http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/sega-saturn-av-port-pinout/ http://www.hardwarebook.info/Sega_Saturn_A/V saturn outputs RGB so that might be a better option if you're going to go to the bother, or you could import a rgb scart cable and then use something to convert the scart to component / whatever if you can get hold of the right mini din connector for the saturn or maybe mod in a custom wired d-sub / VGA then all is well. it's very doable
I get confused between Video signals, from what I can infer from a quality standpoint, it goes something like this?: RF < Composite < S-Video < SCART / RGB < Component YCbCr < HDMI basically I want a little project to learn and apply soldering into something I enjoy so that I can do useful things in the future. Basically I just want better video quality out of my Saturns without forking over $50+ for S-Video / SCART upscaler. If I can do a little soldering to split the video signals so theres less interference and use some cheap off the rack cables, then i'd be a happy person c: I've got a Sega Genesis I wanna get better picture out of too, and with these Saturns, I want good picture too without breaking the bank. I'm a broke college student and can't be spending so much on just cables alone. I also wanna be able to add a region switch or have the experience to uhm, do the modchip thingy eventually. thanks!
component is not better than RGB. it only supports 480p and higher resolution where RGB max out at 480i. they can be accepted same quality or RGB is a bit better because of conversion losses.
S-video can be taken straight from the av socket. Problem is where to mount the s-video socket neatly. I have this done to mine where i mounted the sockets on the side under the power supply.
You think it's possible to do it on the battery compartment door? I'd like to mount that there, along with a switch for region select, but i dunno if this kind of thing would fare well against movement, removal of door for battery access every so often...
if you use enough wire then it should be ok, you may need to secure the wire inside somewhere also somehow so it doesnt pull or stress on your solder points when you open the door etc. if you can source one of the mini din connectors you could make your own s-video cable without any screwing around with the system needed.
Problem is sourcing 10 pin mini din connectors. I remember up until recently 9 pin mini din was hard enough. Oh but if you 9 pin din, here's a bucket load, what? you want the U shaped ones.... lol! I thought about the door as well, but just doesn't seem "secure" enough for me (having sockets on a door).
Its not so difficult to find the connector to make the cable. Also you can make the svideo out and mount it on the battery compartment but you have to give the cable length like other tell to release the door without stress the cable and break the solder. If you go for the svideo connector do the stereo output too in the same place. If you go for the cable go to ebay and look for the connector there are a lot of chinnese sellers that have it at a cheap price but have to wait for the ship.
My Sega Saturn has standard video and S-Video port so I don't need to hunt down that cable whenever I move around and lose cables. SCART to composte and S-Video adapter is about the right size to fit in the battery bay. First, get new battery installed so you won't need to deal with it for another 10 or so years. Then using google find the pinout of that AV port and run wires to the sockets inside SCART box. Once it's done and tested working, put the Saturn back together the box slides in and stays in nicely. A little hot glue will help keep it from wiggling loose. This assume you don't have VCD card installed and don't plan on getting one at all.
It was a pain in the butt to find the S-video connector, since they aren't that common with everybody either using RCA or HDMI these days. http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/MD-40SP/CP-2640-ND/166042 Get some wire, follow the guides, and mount this somewhere you should be fine.
Try this one: http://console5.com/store/parts/av-jacks/s-video-jack-gold.html A bit cheaper, good site, and you only need one hole to mount and lock the video port. The one on Digikey needs 2 more holes for screw to mount the port.
Ha ha interesting that was back in 2013. When I first created that idea. I'm the original creator of that mod. It's great everybody's using it. Keep in mind that I was the original creator of that and I did that back in 2013 I did a quick search and I wasn't surprised that it matched up to the date. I ordered about 10 of those scart boxes and rip them apart and installed them on about 10 Saturn units. Also had one asshole on eBay that saw that and wanted to know exactly what that box was the guy was such an idiot not to realize what it was, pretty much trying to copy my idea and make money off of it. Even tried to go as far as ordering one of my units on eBay I cancelled his order. I'm glad that my little creation is being used. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up that this was my contribution and I hope everybody enjoy this little mod, I actually had a video on YouTube I doubt it still there. I'd have to go check to see if it's still there on a different YouTube account. I don't see why I wouldn't be there I should go check right now
