I have a Samsung drive here that doesn't read discs. Well it kinda reads audio CDs but skips the track all over the place. Could be the laser is well and truly on the way out, but I thought it might be worth seeing if it can get a bit of life from tweaking the pot. Thing is I don't know which one to tweak: The one on the right (near the sticker) is reading 590 on the multimeter, the one of the left is reading 557 (set at 20,000 Ohms). Which one is used for DVDs? I'm guessing the one on the right near the sticker.
Here's a complete guide for the 605 I found a few years back on another forum. It didn't work for me but it might work for you. http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/409908
Thanks man, I saw that site earlier when doing some searching of my own. I don't think I'm gonna have any luck either. All the sites talk about setting the multimeter to 2000 Ohm and then lowering the value on the pot. However whenever I do it, the value pretty much stays the same and is only noticeably changed when setting the multimeter to the 2k setting. Don't know what's going on there! Shame lasers for this aren't cheap like for the 360. I see a replacement on ebay for £12, but in most cases you can get another console for that price.
You could just find a cheap Samsung SD616 and use the laser from it. The 605 is based on the 616 and share the same laser sled design. Pop the laser sled from a 616 into your 605 and enjoy faster disk access times. I did that and it worked quite well until my driver board burned out due to leaving a thermal pad out. Still need to fix it. Have like 4 605 and 5 616 drives laying around. Need to get to work on repairing them all.
Yeah I think it's just gonna sit aside for now. I said it before and I'll say it again, shame these lasers aren't more affordable. I got a 360 replacement for £5 which sorted out disc reading issues. But it's not worth spending £12 on a replacement for this.
why are the newer drives more expensive? seem's like they would cost more. there has to be someone with a stockpile of them.what is the best drives for the xbox?
Best drive would be the Hitachi/LG GDR8050L. Found mainly in XBOX versions 1.6b (the latest motherboard revision)
