My daughters laptop has just started playing up today and I was hoping someone here would know which was the best route to take. The model in question is a Pressario CQ61, it's under 2 years old and gets used on a regular basis but is well looked after. She was sitting on the sofa this afternoon on FaceBook, playing The Sims: Social. All of a sudden the screen freezes and the only way to get rid of it is to power the machine off. She then turns it back on, gets the red COMPAQ screen and then the screen goes black for about 30 seconds or so then lights up for her to put her password in then flickers and goes black again as if it's turned off. And stays off. The power light is on as is the wi-fi light, but the screen appears to be dead. Does anyone here have any knowledge of what this could be or how it could be fixed, if indeed it can be fixed at all? The laptop works perfectly, at the minute it's connected up to my TV via its HDMI port but then the second you unplug it the laptop screen comes back on for a second, flickers then dies again. Any and all input and advice greatly appreciated.
Sounds like the screen is dying, probably some loose contacts. If you don't feel comfortable fixing it, just buy a monitor and keep using it as a desktop.
That is what I had to do with my MSI GX620, but not because I didn't feel comfortable fixing it. I paid 700.00 for it three years ago but last year the lcd died and the cheapest I could find was somewhere around 300.00. Nutz to that! I bought a somewhat decent ASUS lcd montior for 50.00 and now it is my "desktop".
Screen is going without a doubt in my opinion. A replacement screen would probably be roughly £60. Not difficult to fit really, just lift the rubber covers and unscrew it then unsnap the bezel. Just be careful as its those tabs so use a small flathead screw driver. Then remove the screen, plug the cable into the new one, remount and you should be good to go. Make sure you buy the right screen, some places can be way too vague about the model and I've had them show up not as described and completely uncompatable.
Thanks for the feedback folks, it's appreciated. Cyantist, where would I source a screen locally, any idea?
It's also possible that the screen control pcb is on it's way out. i would maybe look at that first before you buy a whole new screen. The florescent bulb at the bottom of the screen sometimes blow in them as well.
I was about to say that. I have replaced backlights in two monitors, got the backlights for 9$CAD each from ePay. if you are functional in Mandarin, you can probably find them cheaper, but 9$ for backlight > 95$ for new monitor.
It might be worth checking the connectors. My cousin's laptop screen started flickering before going completely dead. The ribbon cable between the LCD and mainboard had come loose by a fraction of a millimetre. Plugging it back in and taping it in place sorted it.
Research says these laptops do have an issue with this. http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebo...d-Need-ideas-Presario-CQ61-HP-G61/td-p/615425 What type of screen is it? Then I'#ll track down the inverter and back light
Really stupid question here, but how do I find out the type of screen? Sorry if I sound a bit thick but I'm not at all very techy.
Generally laptop screens are a fit-one-only model, so you'd need to source a screen that comes from your model or one that's a direct replacement for it, try looking on ebay for your laptop model and monitor or lcd.
Thats not entirely true... Most laptop screens usually fit a couple of models from the same brand at the very least. Sometimes its just a generic part used in different brands too. Within the top half of the laptop, they are all pretty much the same. Design varies in the lower half. Id suggest opening up the laptop and looking for any and all part numbers on the screen. You can then google that part number to find what laptops that screen was used in. Then you can ebay for replacement screens for those models or whole faulty laptops.
I have an Acer with a 15.6" screen, but any screen will fit in my laptop. As long as the plugs are the same. There is a screen that i'm looking at on Amazon that gives you better picture than a TV does. Only $130 + shipping.
