Subtlety might be part of it, music coming out lately has been...........kind of ehhhhhhhhh besides Daft Punk's Random Access Memories, some Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson's album anyway. So I think the complexity of Jazz I find appealing I've been listening to it my entire life just never truly appreciated it until now.

I didn't know that about Mingus I of course know the story behind Fables of Faubus on Mingus Ah Um and how his label didn't want the lyrics on the album as they were too political for a time as racially charged as it was.
I have Mingus Ah Um I'm hunting down a decent copy of Let my Children hear music, He had alot of great music output from the late 50s-mid 60s not sure about his later work.

Yeah, he had ALS. He still managed to compose and supervise recordings though, I believe. Yup - Blues & Roots was great in particular.

LMCHM was remastered on CD and is very cheap on Amazon if you just want to hear it. The vinyl is a bit tricky to find, though.

I didn't know that at all.
I do have the CD in my Amazon wishlist, it's not rare on vinyl, just a little pricey $35-40 seems to be a common thread with titles I really want on Vinyl. (My all time Favorite Album, NIN's the Fragile is nearing $300 on vinyl)

Blues and Roots is great, Moanin (not to be confused with the Bobby Timmons tune of the same name) is one of my favorite Jazz tracks of all time. Like Part Avant Garde part Swing. Great stuff.

Then there's Mingus Plays Piano which was just reissued on vinyl but it appears to have sold out it's entire run.

Moanin' is one of my favourites as well. That's why I used it in my Ice Bucket Challenge video when mentioning Mingus ;)

If you can get to a good record shop that happens to have a copy of LMCHM and they'll let you listen (and have a reasonable system), that's great! We have a strange record shop locally - it's a hodge-podge of all sorts of genres and all sorts of eras. Still, it's nicely catalogued. Some of their stuff is reasonable, some is pricey. Some is practically new, some is questionably worn. Oh yeah, and they sell alcohol and local honey and stuff like that, too! However, they'll spin something on a Pro-Ject system for you, so you know you're hearing it pretty well. And hey, if you hear it and it's not that good a quality, maybe it's worth holding out for a reissue? The CD, for all the negatives you can say against digital, is at least remastered from the original tapes. Hell, it's under $5 shipped - worth a try!

Can't really talk about Mingus without bringing up where I first heard the name.

Though Smooth Jazz is not how I'd describe Mingus at all.

I think I might just grab the CD after all. I'm still figuring out my next haul, and have been for the last 3 weeks. Alot of people have been floating me suggestions, I'm taking a foundations in music class, my professor HATES teaching and it shows, it's reflecting in the Class' grades but he loves Jazz, so First class I struck up a convo with him and a few weeks later he sent me 2 pages of reccomendations. Nothing on Mingus though.

I don't know much about the scene around me, but there's a Record store in New York that's filled to the brim with Jazz Albums I'm going to hit up, Right near Lincoln Center.
