When a supply of NOS stock dries up that's pretty much what happens yeah. Or prices become extortionate. Same thing happened with the official SLS Sega Saturn USB controllers a few years back. Used to buy those at £10 a pop. Now you can barely find them.
I read somewhere that someone was looking into getting another batch manufactured, though this could take a few months. If you're desparate, there is one on ebay for £40 (£60 BIN) + £2 p&p, otherwise it might be worth waiting to see if if more are produced. Also, keep an eye out for GBA SP listings, you might find a cheap AGS-101 where the seller doesn't realise what they have. Edit: It was this thread. Not cheap, but it looks like someone is selling genuine screens as well. http://gbatemp.net/threads/gba-backlight-agb-001.328487/page-38
Is there any schematics available? I'm sure there would be some LCD manufactures who would easily make new screens like the aspect, size and resolution aren't a problem it's mainly the connector and ribbon that's the issue..
