Yeah i still have my aibo,

It really depends on what your expectations are of an aibo are, i have mine running most of the time & im still amazed that he keeps on coming up with weird little quirks & tricks that i havent seen before.

Personally i think they are well worth getting.

If your buying off ebay be very careful as there are soooooo many scam auctions & aibo's are a prime target for them. This has been made a hundred times worse by the fact that sony have now stopped production of all models by april this year.

I still need to get hold of the mind 3 upgrade before it disappears for good.

Um why is it a waste of money? You dont know how much i even paid for mine, nice way to jump to conclusions. Until you have owned one your in no position to say to anyone what is & isnt a waste of cash.

Its no more a waste of money than paying hundreds of $/£ for some piece of dev hardware that most people on here would have no idea how to use. Or some beta game that not complete & only has 1 buggy level.

Theres more to aibo than you think, the programming enviroment is fully open source so you can write new personallities for it.

The reason why sony have stopped production is because they are losing money & are having to close various divisions of their company, so the robotics department has to go so that means no more Qiro as well.

I guess I waste a lot of money [IMG]

I do quite a bit of programming with my aibos and I have entered a few of them in Robocup like matches. When in autonomous mode, they never cease to amaze. The OpenR SDK is a must have.

Here is a picture of my Aibos:

Below are 4 factory sealed Aibos that have never been opened. The three ERS-110's are exceptionally rare. They are the very first Aibo's Sony built. Sony only made 5000 of the ERS-110 model, and of those 5000 only 2000 were US models. I was unbelievably lucky to get my hands on three of them. I also have two factory sealed performer kits (in the unopened FedEx boxes) for the ERS-110 Aibos.

Finally, here are some RoboOne fighting Robots. I have not had a chance to build the Hitec Robonova-1 yet. These are both walking bipedal robots that offer a lot of room for hardware / software ingenuity.

If it was cheap, and i had acess to one, i would own one for sure. Not to replace a real dog or anything like that.

Just because i like robotics and would be fun to show it to my friends.

Thanks. I thought about getting one of the panda kits, but decided against it in the end. Have you had your ERS-7 for a long time?

Actually, they are quite a bit more than that. Especially when the earlier models came out. They were 3, 4, or 5 times that amount.

That is grossy oversimplifying things. Sorry if I sound a little annoyed here, but I do not understand how people can say something it is a waste of money when they have not one idea of what its capabilities are. Actually, even if they did understand what its capabilities were I'm not quite sure on what grounds they can base something as being a waste of money. Especially considering the fact that alot of people on this forum collect items that a large portion of the world would consider a "waste of money". I guess I just expected a little more understanding.

First and foremost, it is an autonomous robot endowed with a 64 bit RISC proc., 20 degrees of freedom, and a host of sensors including a three-axis accelerometer, infrared distance, CMOS imaging sensor, etc.
It has both voice and facial recognition, meaning that it understands voice commands and will learn its owners face. It has patten recognition as well which enables it to fetch a ball or its bone (this can be further exploited with the use of the SDK to track other objects). In the soccer competions that I have entered my Aibos in, they track the ball by themselves, advance toward the ball by themselves, and kick the ball either to another Aibo or toward the opposing teams goal.
They have the ability to sense when they are low on charge and to then approach their charging station for recharge. If Aibo falls over, he will pick himself back up. They have edge detection as well.
Should you decide to "raise" your Aibo from an "infant" stage to adulthood, the Aibo will advance according to how it is treated (left alone, played with constantly, praised, scolded, etc.).
Should you desire, you can remotely control your Aibo over WiFi and view color video transmitted back from Aibo's CMOS camera on your PC.
Aibo will even read your email to you !
There are a host of other features as well.
If you are willing to invest a little time with it, the OpenR SDK allows for some extreme configurability.

A robot that walks around and looks at you - I think not.

Cool idea, but $1000 seems a little overpriced for me. It would be fun to teach it to annoy my dogs by chasing them or something, though! :110:

I always wanted an Aibo myself. Thanks for the awesome pictures, bitrate! That's a nice collection there. I never knew there was so much out there for the little Aibo. Sad they're halting production.

    I guess I'll just go play with my husband's Robosapien. ^_^;;

wow thanks for that nice summary bitrate, i never knew that there was SO much possible...never heard of the Aibo as Open sourced as well, that's awesome :)

a friend of me used to have one and he trained him to run to the door when the bell rings and stuff like that, i always liked it.

i bet if they wouldn't be that expensive i would have one myself :)
how much do they go for nowadays? or is that 1000bucks a price expectation for today?

Dont worry about him Bitrate, its quite clear he knows nothing about aibos & is just talking shit.

Dont let people like him put you off from posting here (^_^)

As for my ERS7, he is pretty old now he came from the first batch with mind 1. I gave him the mind 2 upgrade but im hoping to buy mind 3 pretty soon before it dissappears.

Im hoping to pick up a latte one day as i love the look of them.

As much as i respect other people's opinions, i have to say that criticizing and saying this or that is waste of money a bit agressive. Like Bitrate say, some people collect items here that for the majority of people that does not care about games, would say it's waste of money.

Do whatever you like with your own money, and don't criticize other people's likes or dislikes.

Bitrate, i didn't knew Aibo could do so much stuff. Even read e-mails? That's cool. Too bad it's still pricey. =/
