The plotline of Alien Soldier has always been complex and hard to make heads or tails of. It explained in the prologue of how the Scarlet terrorist organization, comprised of artificial lifeforms created through advanced genetic engineering and lead by Epsilon-Eagle, had the power to prevent humans from getting into and out of the planet Sierra, which they stood close to conquering. The Sierrans sent out a special combat group with superpowers for an assassination attempt on Epsilon. Of course, Epsilon was injured, and, as a result of both the combat group and Scarlet members activating their powers at the same time, was caught in the time-space continuum. After that, Xi-Tiger took over as the head of Scarlet and began ordering more frequent and brutal attacks on the Sierrans that, in an invocation of the trope "Even Evil Has Standards", the other Scarlet members began demanding for Epsilon to be re-instated. Unpopular with his fellow Scarlet members, he sought to kill Epsilon, and in an attempt to activate the time-space continuum, he launched an attack on a research laboratory, where kidnapped children with superpowers were kept prisoner. Xi-Tiger sensed Epsilon's presence in one of the boys, but what struck the ferocious feline odd is the absence of Epsilon's evil. So, he took a young girl hostage and demanded for Epsilon to reveal himself or else he'd kill her. Thus, the boy flew into a rage and transformed into Epsilon, as a birdman with steel wings. Sensing an unknown power within Epsilon, Xi-Tiger fled but not before killing the girl. Declaring to Xi-Tiger that he will never let him get away, Epsilon went off in pursuit of him. However, another similar birdman was created, and although their bodies were identical, the second birdman had evil intentions. He too went off in search of Xi-Tiger. According to the Japanese material for the game, the second birdman was named Epsilon-1, which so happens to be the evil half, while the Epsilon the player plays as is Epsilon-2, the good half. As it turned out, when Epsilon was thrown into the time-space continuum, his being had somehow split into two. But, what's odd is that Epsilon-1 was the name of the robo-eagle that is fought on the space elevator in Stage 17. You never fight him as a birdman similar to Epsilon-2, but as a robo-eagle. But, considering how the development process of the game went, with Hideyuki Suganami wanting to make it by himself, it wasn't too surprising. Along with that, the boy who hosted the parasitic form of Epsilon-2 is named Fou Misaki, and the girl who Xi-Tiger killed and controlled Seventh Force is named Kaede Nanase, who happened to be a cyborg with ESP powers. Oh, and the guy that turns into Xi-Tiger in Stage 9; His name is Kyosuke Toraya. There's also mention of a person named Tenma Kuroki in Epsilon-1's profile. The story has always been a mess. They had the story on their website back when it came out to try and clairfy it. Based on some random interviews with Treausre it seems Alien Soldier had a very troubled development history. I know when it was first shown you originally played as a human character. It also seems like the story was kinda thrown together when the game was close to completion. Hideyuki mentioned a lot of the stuff in the game was just thrown in because it seemed cool without any rhyme or reason.
Mmm-hmm. And from what I got out of that second link through Google Translate; Scarlet was originally a research institute involved in advanced genetic engineering. Originally, the superintendent was Nanase 1, who was Kaede's father. He committed suicide, and taking his place as the head of the institute was Yu Misaki, a 10-year-old girl with an abnormally high I.Q. Yu pushed for the "Alpha Plan", a project where complete ecosystems would be created with genetic engineering, along with advanced technology for space travel. However, at one point, the lifeforms of the artificially-created ecosystem began to rebel, forming the underground terrorist sect that is lead by Epsilon-Eagle. Another research institute, "Indigo", sees the threat posed by the Scarlet terrorist group (and also seemingly having Yu Misaki to blame for its formation), they send out a special combat group with superpowers, the X-Ages (who also happen to be children), to assassinate Epsilon and apprehend Yu Misaki. After the assassination attempt, the X-Ages soon came upon a young boy who looked similar to Yu Misaki. That boy, who happened to be Fou, wore a collar engraved with "MISAKI-4", so they took him into custody. Kaede, who acts as a controller for Seventh Force (she controlled it with ESP powers), had apparently lost her memory or something like that. As part of her re-education, they tasked her with taking care of Fou. The two ended up bonding with each other in a way that bordered on love. The bond was tightly-knit that they closed themselves off to other people. At one point in time, with Xi-Tiger heading Scarlet, the terrorists captured members of the X-Ages and interrogated them for the location of the Indigo facility, in his bid to assassinate Epsilon and secure his power within Scarlet. If anyone can effectively translate the content of that second link, it would be appreciated, and anything I got wrong about this backstory you are welcome to correct me on.
